What Conan Doyle failed to tell

When a Stradivarius that was a gift from Peter the Second disapears, Shelock Holmes and Dr. Watson decide to travel to Brazil in order to unravel the mystery. The detective is not as sucessful in this story as he was in the tales of Conan Doyle, and the funny situations keep showing up in this delightful story by Jo Soares. You cannot miss this!

Quite helpful

Critical reading and evaluation of information is imperitive in today's world of media/info overload. These books give a young person a chance to practice those skills before being bombarded with the biased. These workbooks also give them a chance to practice their writing skills using a variety of topics presented. There are no wrong ways to read and write in this book; just practice and learning. I wouldn't do without these books for my home students.

Not overwhelming with frills, but plenty of information. It is simple and self explanatory so I'm not standing over their shoulder interpreting for them.

Each short chapter can be done in a week at one page a day.
The format is layed out as such: a wide variety of short writings to read, room to write notes on the side (response notes), making connections to the story note space, questions to provoke more thought, intrepretation or write-your-own space.

Excellent art, very good story

The story is what draws you into a book normally, but in this format, the artwork is as important as the words - and the artwork delivers! Breathes live into the words and helps you feel them even more so.

The story was a bit confusing in a couple of places, but never enough to make you lose connection - loved both completely.

Need Improvements

I worked on the past with Arena and since 2005, I did not have more contact with this simulator, for this reason I took the decision to buy a book, just to refresh my knowledge.
I would like to give 5 stars for this one, but even thinking about 3 stars, you have to be very generous.
The content on the index gives the impression that the book will cover the main subjects. But when you start to do the examples, you have to decipher some steps that are not clear.
I spent so much time just looking for the right information, mainly because the final reports do not match with the book examples.
The exercises available do not have answers, so you will never know if you are on the right direction.
I am very disappointed with this book, I took the decision to buy another one (Simulation with Arena by W. Kelton, R. Sadowski and N. Swets)

A very tough read.

As the title suggests, this is a book about improving your speed. It is a general book applicable to any sport. And so the authors go to great lengths to generalize their program. I expected to read about the latest in exercise physiology concerning speed, recommended training, and exercises. We do get that sort of thing in a manner of speaking, but to put it very bluntly, this book is one of the most jumbled, mixed up, illogical presentations you are likely to read. Hard to believe three college graduates put this together. In order to get anything out of this book you kind of have to trudge all the way through it and improvise your thought process as you go. The authors give absolutely zero help. Do we get titles to the latest studies on sport speed--in the negative. Do we get information on the latest persons doing research on the subject--in the negative. Do we get a logical, understandable training program--in the negative. What we get instead is kind of a hodge podge of information coming from all directions without hardly any logical organized presentation. Oh--there is the seven step speed training program presented in 7 different chapters. And to give credit--it does look like this is a good speed improvement program. However the information the seven chapters (and you have to get through 3 almost imconprehensible chapters to get to the program) seems to rain down from the sky in a very disconnected fashion. There are few explanations of the whys and wherefores; there are zero explanations on where the program comes from or how it was put together, or where it fits in anywhere in what is being done by any one. It is just there, presented, and I suppose we are supposed to swallow it all on faith. There are presented many descriptions and photographs of useful looking exercises. I do know more about speed improvement after reading the book. But the information was gotten by pulling teeth.

Don't believe the hype!

The book deserves some credit because it does list contemporary training techniques in a comprehensive fashion, but it does not bring them together in a practical manner. There are also certain errors: 1) That you should do plyometrics last in a training program. Yeah right, high intensity training when you're tired. That removes the benefits and sets an individual up for injury. 2) Not mentioning true periodization for strength training. 3) Presenting impractical programs, especially for high school athletes. 4) Giving credibility to a fad diet (i.e. The Zone). That's almost shameful. If I had time, I'd list some other complaints. It's sad, but I have to admit that this is the best book out there for speed training. Just read it critically!

Good book for the non-track athlete

Unfortunately this book ignores periodization issues with the 100-200 meter runner. Excellent ideas are presented here for the track athlete, but the focus of this book is on the football, basketball, and baseball players of the world. One good thing about this book is that it does not believe in the defeatest attitudes of many coaches: "Speed can't be taught", "Sprinters are born, not made". Houston McTear, being the exception, most sprinters have to be developed.

IF I COULD GIVE THIS SIX STARS I WOULD - IT'S BEAUTIFUL!

If you are an emotional reader like I am then grab a box of tissues. I have always said I love it when an author can pull me in and make me feel like I am walking in the story right along with the characters. This one did just that, and so much more.

I don't know how many times I have asked my kids this questions "If your friends jumped off a cliff would you". Never once did I consider "if your friends went cliff jumping would you". I loved cliff jumping when I was younger. Now as an adult / mother, I would never do it. Plus the older I get the wimpier I get...hehe.

Bryan is looking forward to going on a trip with the youth. This will be his last time to go because he is 18 . He sets off on his adventure with his best friends, sister Becky, and much to his chagrin his parents as chaperone's, along with other youth. (youth, a word in my world (LDS world) meaning ages 12-18 groups). They are going on a white water rafting trip.

Bryan's father tell him that there will be some cliffs they will be able to jump off of when they are on the trip. Bryan is so excited and shares the news with this friends. All of the boys are even more excited to go on this trip now.

Two days into their rafting trip they make camp and find the cliffs. Bryan's friends were enjoying themselves before Bryan was able to join. When he arrived he didn't want to "show" every one up, but he decided he must dive. Bryan takes a running jump and does the most beautiful swan dive and enters the water like butter, and his whole life changes.

Bryan realized when he hit the water that something was wrong.. The bottom was coming too fast, and then he hears a pop. He knows, right then that his life will never be the same.

Unable to move Bryan sits in the water holding is breath until someone finally is able to get to him and bring him to the surface. They boys and leaders know right away something is wrong. Bryan's dad knows that Bryan will not survive a trip to the hospital on the rafts so he goes to the nearest ranger station. Leaving Bryan and his mother on the shore to wait for help. 18 hours they waited. I cannot even tell explain how hard it was to read about those 18 hours, yet also so loving to read. A true showing of love and friendship was shown during those long hours.

Bryan, from the moment he was retrieved from the water did not complain even once. He responded when he saw his dad "That was the best swan dive ever". Who says that? He knows he will probably be paralyzed but this kid. This kid..is amazing. He had unwavering faith.

This book brought me to tears so many time. Not only because of the hardships Bryan faced, but because even when facing them, he went forward with perfect faith and determination. I cried at the devotion his family. I cried at his determination. It was such a beautiful story.

Bryan faces a life in a wheel chair but during the healing process finds love. I love stories like this. I could go on and on. I really could. There is so much I want to say, but then I would ruin the book. Maybe not ruin but wouldn't allow you to feel your own "emotions" while reading. Spoilers do that to me.

My heart ached for Bryan. It cried for Bryan. It laughed for Bryan. This man. What can I say. Determined. Charismatic. Optimistic. Kind. Loving. Non judgemental. I think about the things Bryan had to go through and it reminds me of everything I have to be thankful for. I have the use of my arms, and legs. I can do things for myself. I can play with my kids. I can read without help. I can do many things. So could Bryan. He was determined not to let his disability define him.

There are quotes before every chapter that just made my heart happy. I want to share a few:

This next one is my favorite quote. It is from one of the sweetest ladies to ever walk the earth (besides my mother;) ).

Bryan was one of the best examples of this. He is such a funny guy. A prankster. Even without the use of his legs...a prankster :).

Okay, I will stop. It was such a beautiful story, of trials, determination, love, hope, and unwavering faith. I was touch so deeply by this book, that even after I was done reading I thought about it all day. Every time a "hard" moment would come to me during the day I thought of this book, and began to cry all over again. I have nothing to complain about. My life is a wonderful life, and this book helped me look at things a little different. A little brighter. A little more appreciative. A little more loved. Seriously. Such a beautiful story.

I started this book yesterday morning and finished long before bedtime - I love stories like this one!

I met Stacy earlier this year at a writer's conference. At the time I was interested in reading her Princess Sister books because I love twisted fairy tales. Unfortunately my review is list so long I never got around to getting those books read. Stacy contacted me a couple weeks ago asking if I would be willing to review her newest book which is based on her father-in-law's life. Honestly I'm not sure why but initially I wasn't really excited to read this book. However yesterday morning found me looking for something Sunday appropriate to read so I started this book. And then read it every chance I had until I finished it long before bedtime.

I actually love stories like this. Ones that show the power of the human spirit and what love and determination can achieve. I cried multiple times while reading this but they were a happy sort of hopeful tears. I felt so much admiration for a few of the characters and the choice they made. And I loved when I got to the end of the book and saw the actual photos of the people I had just read about. This world needs more people like Nedra and Bryan.

There were a few times the story lagged a little bit but it would pick right back up before I lost interest. It has a memoir-ish feel to it and rightfully so as it is based upon actual people and events.

It you are looking for something uplifting and motivational read this heart-felt story of love and hope.

A story of faith and determination

Based on a true story, the inspirational My Name is Bryan is a story about a guy who makes the dive of his life--just not the way he thought it would when he jumped. I plowed through his story, amazed at how he could so easily accept something that would destroy anyone else and just move forward with such a positive attitude. I don't give many 5 stars, but it's well-earned. This book really touched me. It's the kind of story that stays with you for a long time.

Now as then a cultural curiosity, the resurrected reminiscences of 1920s Latin Quarter model "Kiki" appear with the original prefaces by artist Tsuguharu Foujita and Ernest Hemingway, the latter of whom described her as "a woman who was never a lady at any time." The French edition was released in 1929; an English translation was denied entry by U.S. customs the next year on grounds of obscenity, owing to the reproductions of paintings by Foujita and photographs by Man Ray that accompanied the slim text. An illegitimate village waif raised in poverty by her grandmother, Alice Prin was born in 1901. At 12 she joined her mother in Paris only to go off on her own at 14 as model for, then mistress to, a generation of sculptors, painters and photographers. Merely an amateur at more professional entertainment, she nevertheless sang in sleazy clubs, appeared in nine films, danced in Fernand Leger's Ballet Mecanique. Offered freely, her svelte body brought her fame without fortune. When journalist Henri Brocca arranged for publication of her memoir, and news spread that for 30 francs, one could acquire an autographed book and a kiss from Kiki, men discarded their dignity in the rush. Once depression and war put an end to her brand of frivolity, she contended that all she required was "an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of red," and she usually found "somebody to offer me that." Nearly forgotten, she survived into 1951. Putnam's 1930 translation evokes Kiki's childlike qualities. Insubstantial despite the prefaces, dozens of illustrations, including the author's own naif pictures, and?as supplement?three autobiographical articles for a Paris paper in 1950 that repeat much of the memoir, Kiki's offering is more artifact than art. Kluver and Martin are the coauthors of Kiki's Paris.

Souvenirs of Kiki's Memoirs

Being a veritable Kiki virgin before I read this book, I found Kiki's Memoirs more than helpful in showing the atmosphere of 1920's Paris. I did, however, agree with Ernest Hemingway's sentiments from his introdution-it is impossible to translate Kiki's words very well. It seems like Samuel Putnam was unable to get more than four sentences out without putting in an exclamation mark. This breaks the narrative up considerably. I would have given this book three stars, but I loved the Man Ray photos in it. The real strength of this book lies in the artwork.

Fateful Encounter focuses on the relationship between two headstrong artists who for a while worked in close collaboration and then tried to find their own separate ways. Although Camille was determined to carve out a niche of her own by focusing on her "sketches from nature" (scenes of daily life captured as they happened), she found it extremely difficult. Rodin fared better and in 1898 created Balzac, the work that he himself described as the "linchpin of his aesthetic". In 1899, with Rodin’s creation of another masterpiece, The Age of Maturity, Camille reaffirmed her desire to break off relations with him. From 1900, with Rodin at the forefront of the art scene, Camille gradually slid into madness and was soon unable to create. Fateful Encounter is the catalogue to an exhibition in which Camille and Rodin once more come face to face. It’s an illuminating joint appraisal of their work with each represented by an equal number of pieces of similar importance.
