A much-needed context for the Xscape album

This is a must-have book for Michael Jackson fans as well as anyone who is interested in the anatomy of Jackson's art and his creative process. The book traces the origins of 8 songs released on the second posthumous album Xscape - namely "Love Never Felt So Good," "Loving You," "Chicago" (originally titled "She Was Loving Me"), "A Place With No Name,' "Slave To The Rhythm," "Do You Know Where Your Children Are," "Blue Gangsta" and "Xscape" - and provides a much-needed context for the album. The foreword is written by Jackson's long-time engineer Matt Forger.

Besides sharing the story of each song, through the words of Michael Jackson’s collaborators, the book paints a vivid picture of Michael’s artistic side and his modus operandi in a recording studio.

Nearly every person quoted in the book mentions how much they were affected by the experience of working with Michael Jackson. Many of them were accomplished artists and producers in their own right, and yet they speak of him almost with reverence and treat the opportunity they were given as the greatest blessing of their lives. The excitement in their words when they describe the recording sessions is contagious. Some of the recollections (“His tone is insane, dude. Insane!”) give you goosebumps.

You also get a sense of how demanding Michael was with producers and musicians and how high a bar he set for them – and himself. Chapter “Xscape” offers an exciting glimpse into the chemistry between Michael, Cory Rooney and Rodney Jerkins when the latter just joined the Invincible project. The chapter tells the story of how Michael initially expressed doubt in Rodney’s abilities and Rodney set out to prove himself – with such fervor that he locked himself in the studio for weeks and worked with his team in three shifts around the clock to deliver music Michael would accept. Such was the desire of Michael’s producers to attain to the level of his quality standard.

Chapter “Do You Know Where Your Children Are” is another one that stands out because it touches on social themes in Michael’s work. In MJ’s official discography, these themes became prominent with the Dangerous album (Bad, of course, had “Man In The Mirror,” but that song wasn’t written by Michael). Yet, as Damien Shields argues in “Xscape Origins,” Michael really started focusing on these subjects back in the Bad era, with songs like “Do You Know Where Your Children Are,” “Abortion Papers” and a few others that ultimately didn’t make the cut. In that period, when he was thought of by many as being “out of touch with reality” and living in a fantasy land, Michael was actually very much attuned to social problems.

Another prominent theme highlighted throughout the book is Michael’s never-ceasing zeal for knowledge, for absorbing lessons of history and using them to achieve greater goals. The narration makes a wonderful loop, starting from the words of Michael’s manager Ron Weisner in the first chapter describing Michael’s work ethics in the late 70s when he watched the great performers of the past with the intention to “out-work, out-study and out-think anyone he perceived as a competitor” and ending with an observation by Rodney Jerkins of Michael doing the same 20 years later because “You never stop studying the greats.”

Michael became proficient in learning from the greats. And being an accomplished artist himself, perhaps he envisioned that one day, future generations will be studying his creative process in the same way and be similarly inspired by it. As Matt Forger beautifully says in the foreword, Michael “loved storytelling and would want the story to be told.” And, thanks to researchers like Damien Shields, we now have an opportunity to hear the story and learn from it.

Excellent Read

My thanks to Damien Shields for an insightful and comprehensive analysis of the history and creative process of Michael Jackson and his collaborators for the songs released on the posthumous release, "Xscape." I, for one, always gravitate to Michael's original concept and emotional delivery and am little enamored with "remixes" which is, in reality, all the "contemporized" versions are. In some cases, the remix changes the entire sonic field and emotional and social consciousness factor of Jackson's original intent and in one, even the title of the song was changed. Why mess with perfection? Mr. Shields' treatment of the matter is eye opening and refreshing and makes me appreciate even more the inclusion of Michael's demos on the "deluxe" edition (of which I bought three copies ... hang the expense)! My thanks also to Mr. Forger and the host of collaborators Mr. Shields interviewed. An interesting and veey enjoyable read.

The incredibly detailed and thoroughly investigative account that Damien Shields delivers had me feeling like I was in the recording studio with Michael Jackson himself. Every song has been meticulously researched to provide a sense of working with the King of Pop through his humble and quirky creative process, whilst remaining a strong factual narrative about the origins of Xscape. Damien Shields manages to combine his strong journalistic skills with a wonderfully written story that gives a much too short insight into Michael’s love for producing art. This vivid and memorable examination will leave you lusting for more.

comprehensive & a good resource.

This is very good resource for dealing with pornography addiction especially as it is written from a faith in God perspective. There are not many if any manuals like this one out there. This manual should be more widely read & studied. People with a spiritual perspective or religious faith are even more disappointed when they find that their loved ones are addicted to online pornography. Religious people usually have higher ideals for family relationships & particularly in the relationship between husband & wife. Parents are also deeply shocked when they find their son or sons addicted to this kind of material. They have the added burden of knowing this kind of behaviour is against God's principles & law of love. They suffer from pangs of conscience & feelings of low self esteem that a more secular person may not feel. It surely is one of the great scourges of our times undermining true love in the husband & wife relationship & undermining the beautiful trust & love that should be in those intimate relationsips in the family. None of us are immune from this pernicious temptation & we have to be contantly vigilant about our own actions so that our consciences are clear in this regard. I find that confiding in a loved one is very important to maintain a healthy, happy relationship & especially to keep the beauty of intimate love between husband & wife. In relation to children trust & good communication is vital. We need patience & kindness in all these relationships. Thank you again for a wonderful resource for all people of faith & love for God.

Addiction to lust

Addiction is a disease that hijacks our ability to choose. It is not a 'bad habit', or a 'little problem'. Addiction thrives in isolation and produces shame and secrecy that serve the addiction. Many good people are addicted to lust and will never find freedom through their own efforts. About the Author
Alan Jefferis has been an instructor of drafting technology at Clackamas Community College, an Authorized AutoCAD Training Center in Oregon City, Oregon for over fifteen years. He has also taught for four years at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. His professional experience includes eight years of drafting for structural engineers and sixteen years of residential designing. He is currently the owner of Residential Designs, A.I.B.D.

David A. Madsen is an emeritus faculty member in drafting technology and the Autodesk Premier Training Center at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon, where he also served as an instructor and department chairperson for nearly 30 years. In addition to his community college experience, David served as a drafting technology instructor at Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon. He is a former member of the American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA) Board of Directors and was honored by the ADDA with Director Emeritus status at the annual conference in 2005. David is an Autodesk Authorized Author and has extensive experience in mechanical drafting, architectural design and drafting, and building construction. He holds a master of education degree in vocational administration and a bachelor of science degree in industrial education. Architectural Drafting and Design, 4E

The seller advertised the book as "Used, may have some page wear." When the book arrived, I was delighted to find it in pristine condition.
The book is well written (hence its place as the "bible" of architectural students). Examples are given throughout the text, as well as information about building materials and construction techniques. This information is more than just an overview, yet not bogged down by every small detail that would be more appropriate for a construction, rather than drafting, text.
I'm immensely pleased by the book itself, and quite satisfied with the purchase.

Ahh, the good old days --- of Architectural Drafting

I bumped into this very big, very thick book on Architectural Drafting in a thrift store, and it was so very sweet that I had to have it. This is a Book with a capital B, and you can tell by the large size, the high quality of the hardcover book, and the thick and incredibly impressive number of pages with high-quality full-color illustrations on every page. The dream of the seventies is most definitely alive in this book, every page convincing you that you too can be an architect, if you just put your pencil to paper and work very, very hard.

About the Author
Patricia Libby is Chair of the Department of Accounting and Associate Professor of Accounting at Ithaca College, where she teaches the undergraduate financial accounting course. She previously taught graduate and undergraduate financial accounting at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Before entering academe, she was an auditor with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) and a financial administrator at the University of Chicago. She received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, her M.B.A. from DePaul University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; she is also a CPA.
Pat conducts research on using cases in the introductory course and other parts of the accounting curriculum. She has published articles in The Accounting Review, Issues in Accounting Education, and The Michigan CPA. She has also conducted seminars nation-wide on active learning strategies, including cooperative learning methods.

Robert Libby is the David A. Thomas Professor of Management at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he teaches the introductory financial accounting course. He previously taught at the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, and University of Michigan. He received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and his M.A.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois; he is also a CPA.
Bob is a widely published author specializing in behavioral accounting. He was selected as the AAA Outstanding Educator in 2000. His prior text, Accounting and Human Information Processing (Prentice Hall, 1981), was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contributions to the Accounting Literature Award. He received this award again in 1996 for a paper. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Accounting Research; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; and other accounting journals. He is past Vice President-Publications of the American Accounting Association and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the editorial boards of The Accounting Review; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; Journal of Accounting Literature; and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.

Dan Short is the Dean of the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. �Prior to that he was Dean at Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University and Dean of the Business School at Kansas State University. �Before entering adminstration, Dan taught at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Chicago. �He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. �He has won numerous teaching awards during his career teaching both undergraduate and MBA financial accounting courses.

Great textbook for accounting

I purchased this book because it is the textbook that is required for my very first graduate-level accounting class. Since starting class about 5 weeks ago, I've quickly determined that I'm going to have to teach myself the content of the course since the professor really doesn't "teach" per se...I've realized that 95% of my learning for the class will have to come straight from the text...and in that regard, it's been a great textbook to introduce me to financial accounting. Would I buy it to read in my spare time? Highly unlikely. But as a textbook for a course, it's great. And I LOVE that it was less expensive on Amazon that it was at the university bookstore. BAM. My only wish is that there was an accompanying guide with the solutions to all the problems that are at the end of the chapter...I'd buy that in a minute!!

Financial Accounting

One of the most interesting classes that i took during my time in college was that of Financial accounting. Most students struggle greatly with this class and have a difficult time engaging in the concepts and coming up with the answers to the difficult questions. most of the problems seem daunting at first, but with a little help from going through this textbook and viewing the detailed examples that they have supplied it can be made into a very easy class. one of the most difficult thing about this class is coming up with the concepts. once this is done the questions are easy to figure out and the task of passing the class becomes much easier. this book provided their own website with lists of quizzes and practice tests that can be taken all for free just because the book was purchased. these quizzes help greatly and are key to this book helping student pass this course. the examples laid out in the book are also put forth in a way that makes it very interesting and engaging to student instead of dull or boring like a majority of textbooks around. i recommend this textbook for anyone who is entering this class or for anyone who needs to know more about accounting.

Accounting Can Be Interesting !

This book was required for a foundation course before beginning my MBA program. I dreaded taking the course, but have to admit, it was somewhat interesting thanks in part to this text. The book is extremely in-depth, yet easy to read. If you put forth the effort and complete the chapter-end problems, you are bound to have a solid grasp of the material. This text was moderately priced ($80), but is packed with useful information, organized intuitively. I will keep this book for future reference in both my educational and professional endeavors.

Great combination of teaching tools!

This has got to be the best way to learn to play this kind of music! The DVD, CD, and tab - it's all there. I still can't play like Jorgenson, but at least I know a bit about his technique.

Gypsy Jazz Style Guitar

This is an excellent intermediate book for learning Gypsy Jazz style guitar, which was originally invented and made famous by Django Reinhardt.

Instead of teaching you song after song, this book shows you licks that are patterned after the Man himself for Gypsy Jazz Style Guitar. John Jorgenson's DVD that comes in the book is 2 hours long and steps you through the book.
