Life on the Line: One Woman's Tale of Work, Sweat, and Survival, by Solange De Santis

"Engaging--. Terrific--. Takes us over the collar line with grace and authority."--The New York Times

As a veteran reporter throughout the "downsizing" years of the auto industry in the United States and Canada, Queens-born Solange De Santis covered her fair share of auto plant closings, but almost always from the management's point of view. That is, until this mid-career, mid-thirties, Ivy League-educated journalist quit her job to become an assembly-line autoworker.

She was hired at a doomed General Motors plant, and quickly learned about the bone-crushing realities and mitigated rewards of hard, physical work.In Life on the Line, De Santis offers a glimpse into a world that too many of us shy away from acknowledging, even as we accept the keys to our new cars. Completely candid, and as unexpectedly poignant as it is funny, Life on the Line will change the way you view blue-collar work and the cars on which we all depend.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalistic curiosity led De Santis, a business reporter and freelance writer, to leave her comfortable white-collar world to work for 18 months on an assembly line at a General Motors van plant in Scarborough, Ontario. This lively and absorbing account of her time at GM is based on the daily journal she kept. De Santis effectively conveys the dominant element of working on the line: relentless, backbreaking labor. Whether she was installing hazardous fiberglass insulation, lights or other parts, the work was always dirty, sweaty and physically draining. She came to understand why workers, sometimes including herself, used their breaks to gulp down a few beers in order to get through the final hours of the shift. De Santis documents some sexual harassment in a plant where 15% of the workers were women, but her overwhelming attitude towards her fellows, both men and women, was respect for their hard work. She made several friends at the plant (including her future husband), and came to despise the condescending attitude of her middle-class friends toward factory workers. She includes a lively description of union politics at the plant; the union, however, could not stop GM from shutting down the factory in 1993. In a sad coda, De Santis movingly describes how the people she had worked beside, many of whom had no other place to go, lost their jobs. Agent, Jan Whitford of Westwood Creative Artists.

From Library Journal
Always interested in the life of the blue-collar worker, De Santis, a business reporter, took a job on the line for the GM plant in Scarborough, Ontario. For more than a year, she worked in a variety of different areas, got to know the other employees, and watched them deal with various issues, including the closing of the plant. De Santis helps readers get to know her colleaguesAtheir fears, their joys, and their feelings about being GM employees. She also sees herself grow and develop, falling in love with and marrying a co-worker and dealing with the reactions of family and friends toward her blue-collar work. She also describes her new feelings about the white-collar world as a result of her experience on the line. Humorous, touching, and sad, this fascinating book will stay with you for a long time. From Booklist
De Santis quit working as a business reporter for Reuters in her late thirties to take a job on the line in the General Motors Scarborough Van plant in Ontario. She's at pains to tell readers why she did so: wanting to test herself physically; wanting to free herself from the "cubicled veal pens" of office work; and wanting to tell the story of the people who make cars. Readers will be mesmerized by the fiberglass beneath her fingers and the incredible noise; stunned by the intense physicality of lifting, heaving, bending, twisting; and caught by the vivid personalities of the people with whom she worked. She does indeed challenge assumptions about the kind of folk who work in factories, but mostly she spins a terrific story, meticulously describing what she did all day with vivid pictures of the women and men she did it with. An outstanding read
By A Customer
June 12, 1999 Title: Life on the Line Author: Solange De Santis
After graduating from the highly touted Ivy schools with her master's degree in journalism and a BA in English, Solange De Santis toiled in a very successful white collared workplace. Her fascination though, with "the other side", "the blue collar workers" would somehow overpower all sanity and she would seek out employment in the bowls of the workforce. Her dreams of writing a book and her journalistic past are her rational for exploring her curiosities. Hiding her outstanding employment credentials, she lands an assembler job with General Motor's lisping Scarborough Van plant. Solange, nicknamed Sally by her line mates, would now have 18 months in which to "spy" and compile enough material on life within the plant, before being laid-off, along with its 2,700 strong population. This fascinating account of Sally's perseverance, and demanding requirements associated with manual labor, are truly astonishing. Pushing herself beyond physical limits she thought ever existed, she finds herself becoming attached to her co-workers, "a cog in the wheel". A strong bond develops with her work mates through common hardships somewhat like a "boot camp". Her vivid descriptions of the sites and sounds within the plant and the people she works with have clear images and sounds popping into my head. Her circle of friends, "from all woks of life", are so typical of the many groups within the plant. Reading through her book I find Sally dredging up raw nerve endings I thought were buried long ago, for I am one of the 2,700 employee's of the Scarborough Van Plant that devoted the better part of my working life, along with so many others, to that job, as one of Sally's co-workers, on a different shift, with a different circle of friends, only to find myself one day, writing my resume. This book should appeal to anyone looking for a realistic account of life within those "dark window factories", and the typical "labels" these people are saddled with. Bravo Sally, an outstanding read in contrast to your Wall Street journalism.

Rich in detail and anecdote
By ciccaroe@mskcc.org
How many Ivy-League educated journalists would be willing to break their backs and go work on the assembly line to relay this story authentically? Very few! This writer does, and so gets to know the tasks, the workers and the business of making vehicles from the most telling perspective of all. Thoroughly familiar with the corporate point of view from years of business writing, De Santis joins those people whose sweat and toil actually build our world. She gives us the private musings and dreams of hardworking folks who didn't get all the breaks in life that she did, and shows their courage and determination to survive the brutal decisions of an unfeeling corporation. It's sad that management just can't understand the rage of these people whose jobs have been given a death sentence for the sake of higher profits, yet who are expected to give 100% down to the last day. But their voices need to be heard.

Stands with the best works on working.
By jayce@javanet.com
Solange De Santis was obviously not looking to "rip the lid off" assembly line work when she began either her experience at GM or her book. This is greatly to her credit. LIFE ON THE LINE does all readers the service of allowing them to make up their own minds. The author's point of view develops in the text at the same pace as her time passed on the line.
Crisp and insightful, this book can stand with the best of writing on the subject. The twofold treat is that those with no "shopfloor" experience may come to value more highly those who toil, and those who work on the line may be able to understand that they can be recognized and appreciated by ones not standing next to them in the heat and din.
Brava! From the author's brother.

Frank Lloyd Wright The Houses, by Alan Hess

Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright's Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright's houses-from his Prairie style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs. Along with Weintraub's stunning photos and a selection of floor plans and archival images, the book includes text and essays by several leading Wright scholars. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses is an event of great importance and a major contribution to the literature on this titan of modern architecture.

Must have for Wright fans
By M. Hughes
If you have already read the other reviews you know how good this book is. I wish they had this available when I first started getting interested in Frank Lloyd Wright back in college. All they had then were the dingy, dark, older pictures that really didn't convey just how great some of Mr. Wright's houses were. These new pictures really show how much genius he had in design. What is even more apparant when you see some of these new pictures is just how much mastery he had for setting up a home with natural light. Simply put, if you have the money and are even a casual fan, you should just treat yourself and get the book.

Best Wright House Photos!
By Bruce Guisti
I honestly do not know how many Wright books I have(40-50?). There are better photos of one house like Fallingwater in specific books devoted to one house, but that being said, this is the best book of photos of Wright Houses, particularly Usonian houses that I have ever seen. It is simply stunning. Even the site photographs are magnificent. When you compare the houses that have been moved from their original site(Pope-Leighy, Gordon)to those that have not it makes the genius of Wright even more amazing.

If you are a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, do not miss this!!

a new standard set
By Carl Vagg
first three volumes arrived before time at my door securely packed,
with air bags, in perfect new condition, via amazon [to australia]..
large magazine size, well bound paperback, printed in canada on quality acid-free paper, 220 pages.. nice slightly heavy feel, bound to lie flat, solid cover for paperback with understated interesting pencil anatomy of bodies in asana relevant to volume content, clearly titled in large enough print, eg 'anatomy for BACKBENDS and TWISTS' on colour coded lower half of cover..
volumes look and feel good..

difficult to adequately review such a superlative ground breaking series[!]
everything is well laid out appropriately to learning and enjoying
these unique books.. holding/looking thru a volume while writing
this, i cant get over the level of excellence in everything..
example; section 'key concepts' repeated in each volume, clearly explains
'agonist/antagonist relationships', 'reciprocal inhibition', 'the muscle spindle', 'facilitated stretches', 'key co-activations', 'bandhas',
using specific asana with wonderfully clear large images together with
easily digestible text explanations of exactly how, these key concepts
and processes actually work in your body, and how to translate this
to your own practice and investigation of the asana and concepts..

it isnt just the typical dry text, with inadequate illustrations of many
attempts at yoga and stretching texts.. the imagery alone, combined with
well thought out clear explanations and directions, creates or enhances
your own in-brain imagery of your own muscles and joints in action
as you innervate them.. this is one unique standard setting feature
or these standard setting volumes.. even 'bandhas' are described
and detailed in a way i have never come across before.. making bandhas
interesting and accessible to my mind as real and valuable practices..

reason for ordering the four volumes was owning volI&II of 'scientific keys'
by the same ray long md, orthopedic surgeon and student of bks.iyengar,
shown on the website with ray long and said to have advised on
the contents etc of these volumes..

i am a student of simon borg-olivier and his excellent yogasynergy teachers
and also hold second dan black belt in traditional okinawa gojuryu karate
which has refined stretching and so on.. im not easily impressed, yet
can recognise quality in teaching material when i see it..

rather than describing everything with a long list of superlatives,
my advice to anyone interested in stretching and refined body mechanics
and practices is to simply go to the website; bhandayoga.com
where these volumes are available, together with specific
and marvelous imagery of muscles and joints in motion, plus 3D
rotating figures of yogis in various asanas from 'scientific keys'
and as also included in these volumes..

having attempted sanskrit i appreciate the use of sanskrit asana names
together with the typical english versions, including nice sanskrit
script with titles of asana sections, plus a page on pronunciations..
the 25 page anatomy section is also superb and typical..
back cover title; 'COMBINE MODERN WESTERN SCIENCE with the ANCIENT
ART of HATHA YOGA' gives an idea of [successful] intention here..

without doubt one of the best works of its kind, probably the, best..
these volumes cost me $23 each, plus postage :)

this is a personal unreserved recommendation of this series and of
the related 'scientific keys' for anyone with any interest in
yoga, genuine martial arts, stretching and physiology, or,
as a great gift for anyone with those interests..

Great book - DO NOT order Kindle version
By Satisfied customer
I think the information and pictures in the book are great. BUT I ordered this as a Kindle version which I would NOT recommend. The illustrations are often on the page before the description that refers to the illustration, and so I can't view both at the same time (at least I haven't figured out how to view 2 pages at once in Kindle)

From Publishers Weekly
The Kuczmarskis, a pair of business consultants, trainers and authors, deliver a lackluster primer on the personal and managerial strategies of 25 people from many walks of life. A few are famous, such as Dean Kamen (inventor of the Segway scooter), Craig Newmark (founder of Craigslist, the Internet classified ad service) and actress Susan Anton. Most are less well-known CEOs, political activists, educators, arts administrators and someone who calls himself an esoteric healer. But for such an eclectic group, there are few unusual insights. Most of their ideas come across as platitudes about the importance for leaders of such traits as humility, compassion, transparency and inclusiveness. Many of the anecdotes and inspirational homilies are retreads, though a few are intriguing—for example, the story of how Rep. Jan Schakowsky got started in public life as a crusader for freshness dating on food packages. But even interesting stories often lack a compelling point—Schakowsky's tale, for example, appears in a chapter about encouraging one's colleagues. This attempt to offer chicken soup for the leader's soul provides thin gruel. (July)

From the Inside Flap

Your 7-Step Prescription for creating a compassionately competitive work culture.

For centuries, leaders have been operating within a 'control and compete' mindset. But times are changing. More and more, at the helm of successful companies, you'll find a different sort of leader. Collaborators, not controllers, they are 'square apples,' bold men and women who dare to create success by reshaping the workplace in unexpected ways.

In Apples are Square, innovation consultants and celebrated authors Dr. Susan Smith Kuczmarski and Thomas D. Kuczmarski share with you the secrets of how to become a square apple in your organization.

To develop their groundbreaking strategy for success, the authors interviewed dozens of leadership pioneers, including Craig Newmark (founder of Craigslist), Mary Ellen Weber (former NASA astronaut), and NFL star Chris Zorich, whose personal story inspired the title of this book. With the tools in Apples are Square, you'll be able to take any bruised environment and reshape it into a positive force.

As the authors take you through their seven-step process for rejuvenating your workplace, you'll learn how to:

- Master the six essential qualities of new leadership

- Communicate in innovative ways that inspire people to serve others

- Build strong relationships for a sense of community in your company

- Create loyalty and retain employees

- Encourage personal risk-taking, creativity, and flexibility --From The Inside Flap

Praise for Apples are Square...

Presents the model of leadership necessary to move from the information age to the knowledge-based and ultimately, to a wisdom-based culture. The future depends on the survival of the wisest and on leadership that is based on inner values.
- Deepak Chopra, author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

An effective case for risk-taking within a framework of humanity.
- Business Week

Serving others, helping others, and inspiring others to bring out their inner core of strengths and talents are what the new definition of success is all about.
- Fast Company

Susan and Thomas Kuczmarski have made an important contribution to our understanding of leadership with their new book. It is a work of great substance and relevance that provides not just an entry point for talking about models of leadership, but real profiles of those who have used these models to transform their own organizations and the people within them.
- Donald P. Jacobs, Dean Emeritus, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

Tom Kuczmarski does not have a patent on innovation, but he should have.
--Charles P. Carey, Chairman, Chicago Board of Trade

A rare and powerful book that provides a window into the views, thoughts, and soul of exceptional leaders in simple yet compelling language.
- Dr. Surinder Kumar, Chief Innovation Officer, William Wrigley Jr. Company, and author of Riding the Blue Train

The Kuczmarskis make a key finding managing and motivating people with compassionate, collaborative, transparent and inclusive leadership not only positively affects the traditional bottom line, it also gives a boost to hard measures including ROI, stock price and operating earnings.
- The Hindu Reviews

In this quick but insightful read, the authors outline the six critical values needed to lead and succeed in today's workplace. Their roadmap is based on extensive interviews with 25 pioneering leaders who embody these values. The book also succeeds in terms of its relevancy to today's business environment. Leadership, or the lack thereof, is one of the most pressing issues facing organizations today. At a time when too many corporate leaders are still reading Sun Tzu's The Art of War, this book offers an important alternative approach to leadership. While it might not be the catalyst that finally sparks the revolution, it should at the very least prompt readers to think about the type of individual they are and the type they want to become.
--John Challenger, Chicago Sun-Times
