Marriage! The Journey: From Neediness & Myths to God's Fulfillment, by Anne Trippe

In Marriage! The Journey, Anne has gone public with the wisdom and insight she has shared privately with couples since 1986. This book is a first. It is not just another book on marriage. Anne has given us a guide for creating relationships that reflects God’s original intention for husbands and wives. Marriage! The Journey confronts commonly held myths about marriage with truth. The book shows how God desires to use even the mate’s imperfections to bring each partner into dependency on Christ’s Life and into intimacy with each other.

Anne Trippe has captured for us the depths of marital intimacy and what Father designed for marriage. What she has written here is not theory. It is well tested through many applications in the lives of those she has counseled over the years. Anne candidly exposes the lies that have kept couples bound in unhappy marriages, but, along with that, unveils the truth that sets them free. This book will be lifesaving for many couples who think there is no hope for their marriage.

It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Anne Trippe’s book, Marriage! The Journey. Anne offers no behavior modification advice couched in religious language. Her prescription is simple, practical and biblical. With winsome clarity, she points us back to the indwelling life of Christ and shows us how to experience Him as the very life of our marriage. This book is a “must read” for those wanting to know the kind of marriage God intends for us all.

Who's fault is it?
By G. Massey
This book not only puts your marriage into perspective, but it also puts your life into perspective.

During conflict we have a tendency to point a finger. The problem is that we point the finger at the wrong person. You see, we can't change others, but we can change ourselves. And this is the start of reconciliation. Is it easy? No not at all?

The problem is that we focus on our spouse to bring peace. Well why would the source of your pain bring you peace? And now you're on a crazy cycle looking to the person who causes chaos to all of a sudden bring peace. And when that doesn't happen, you despise that person more and more, and the cycle continues. It's a lose lose.

This is a Christian Book. If you don't believe that Jesus was the creator of this Universe, this book is not for you.

This book will challenge you. YOU have to be the change. You can't say "Well, I'll change if he/she changes too" or "I'll work on my marriage, if he/she does X, Y, Z." Because if you were to die today, and God asked you about your marriage. Are you going to respond like Adam & Eve and play the blame game? We are all responsible for our own actions regardless of another human being.

To sum this book up. Love Christ First. With Christ at the top, you will know how to love all others. You will know how to FORGIVE, as Christ forgives you DAILY.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I believe this book to be the best book on Christian marriage. So many books are written on marriage, but this book is the answer to healing in a marriage. It also offers exercises and other supplements that help you determine the state of your own marriage and how you can be complete in life by following the truths in this book. Buy this book!
By Carrie Newman
This book had me from page one. I haven't finished yet, but I'm reading so much every day and even odered a paperback copy so I could have one to hold and possibly lend to friends. My other copy is on Kindle. Schahrzad has experiences that I wish I had and she describes them in erotic detail. I find this book very exciting and well written. I love strong, honest women and she fits that description. I would love to meet her one day, Ironically she has lived in Omaha, which is a place I lived for 6 months and visited often as a child, and went to school in a city only 20 minutes away from where I live now. This was all just coincidence, but I feel like it was fate.
I am adding to this after I've read the entire book. It's remarkable how good it was considering her friends just said "You should write a book" and didn't have a background as a writer. She's planning a second book, and I'm just as excited to read that. It's so refreshing to know that there are such unflinchingly honest people in this world. She shares her joys and sorrows. I want all my friends to enjoy this book. No fiction book could ever do it justice.

Long winded and seems like fiction
By Stacy R.
The author covers what she wanted to in the first 100 pages. After that it gets redundant with same story different guy. It is sad to see a woman so confused that she thinks she is "making love" to all these men when it is clearly meaningless sex. The stories seem a little over the top and I am not sure if San Diego has that many men craving a woman's treasure that they love to pleasure her but if so the author found everyone of them in the area. It is clear she has an addiction to sex and is longing for a close interpersonal and meaningful relationship that she tries to fill with sex. Hopefully the next book she attempts to write is how she straightened out her life through mental health counseling and abstinence. This book was nothing more than her sexual conquests put together and published.

Another Day in Paradise, by Eddie Little

In the tradition of Jim Carroll's Basketball Diaries, Eddie Little's debut novel traces the outlaw life of a young Irish American. A teenage speed freak and petty thief, Bobbie and his Puerto Rican girlfriend, Rosie, are taken under the wing of an all-round criminal opportunist named Mel, who is old enough to be Bobbie's father, and Mel's girlfriend, Syd. Bobbie's chance to get back on his feet begins as the inside man in a pharmaceutical company break-in. The ensuing crime spree takes the foursome across the Midwest and California of the early '70s--and deeper into the dark world of heroin addiction.

From Library Journal
At age 13, Bobbie leaves the violent, abusive home where he was raised, and this book details his following year. He has an older girlfriend, carries a gun, takes drugs, and is on an ever-tightening spiral to hell, his crimes escalating until they include murder. The plot, which highlights Bobbie's increasing dependence on the highs of violence, is not pointless but instead emphasizes a frightening reality. For Bobbie, read Little. He's been there, and his graphic story is written with an immediacy and realism that will make normal thinking people cringe and parents anxious to protect their children from the harshness in which some youth live. Movie rights have been sold, so expect some interest.?Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas P.L.

From Kirkus Reviews
A gutsy, fresh, and fierce drug novel, something like walking over broken glass barefoot, by first-novelist and former addict Little. Most of the story, set during the late '60s and early '70s in the Midwest and California, has an autobiographical tang. Bobbie, the 14-year-old Irish hero, has been on the street since he was 11, and hasn't much hope of living to 20. As Bobbie matures into a copper-bottomed Huck Finn on heroin, pursuing a life of crime and bloodshed, one fears that the novel's big rainbow buzz will fade and Bobbie head for rehab. But since 12- step programs haven't yet been invented, all stays hopped up and oblivion-bound till the end. Before the drug takes charge of him, Bobbie is braced--even empowered--by the heroin. But after a year of this, no amount of the stuff can return him to well-being. The good days, he realizes, are gone forever, and the need to support his habit with various crimes, petty and big-time, only intensifies. And so little Bobbie takes up with a professional burglar named Mel, twice his age, who recruits him as a worthy sidekick for drug errands usually run around midnight. Bobbie, near the same time, falls in love with Rosie, a star-crossed 17- year-old, also a druggie. Little's strongest suit is to suggest Bobbie's masked fear of exposing his love and friendship for Rosie and Mel: A pro, after all, is supposed to show no feeling. Little keeps Bobbie's emotions capped but pulsating at every step of the way. Little, who runs an AIDS assistance organization in Los Angeles, writes like a bad dream on wheels, unique in the electric authenticity that he brings to every sentence. The stages of addiction have seldom been so vividly drawn. (Film rights to Miramax; author tour) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
Little ... not only understands this seedy underworld but successfully conveys the fear that lurks behind its macho posturing. At its best, his hopped-up writing style is reminiscent of Hunter Thompson and William Burroughs.... -- The New York Times Book Review, Steve Weinstein

Forgotten classic
By Matt W.
It always makes me laugh whenever I see “people” (and by “people” I mean “teenage girls who take astrology seriously and listen to Adele”) wag their fingers and tell me that “karma” is going to get me. It’s cute, the idea that good people get rewarded and evil ones get punished. A ten-second look around our world will disabuse you of the notion that our world has any mechanism for dealing with saints and sinners.

Case in point? Eddie Little. None of you probably know who he is, proving my point for me. I’ll bet most of you know who James Frey is though, he of the phony, Oprah-endorsed drug memoirs A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard. What you don’t know about Frey is that he isn’t just a liar, he’s a plagiarist as well, as virtually all the plot points in both of his books were stolen from Eddie Little’s two (and only) novels, Another Day in Paradise and Steel Toes. The only reason why Frey was never hit with a lawsuit—despite richly deserving one—is because he was smart enough to rob a dead man.

Oh yes, Eddie Little is dead. Barely a month after A Million Little Pieces was published, Little overdosed on heroin in a cheap motel outside of Los Angeles. Even today, nobody knows who he was or that Frey completely ripped him off. And Frey himself is still famous and rich; after being publicly castigated by Oprah, he was given the opportunity to “redeem” himself by writing maudlin novels like Bright Shiny Morning and The Last Testament of the Holy Bible.

So don’t ever try and lecture me about “karma.”

Instead, redeem yourself by reading Another Day in Paradise, one of the finest novels in modern American literature. It’s a slickly written, poignant, funny and frank novel, qualities that are nearly nonexistent in modern culture. Despite being a novel, both Paradise and Steel Toes are heavily rooted in Little’s life growing up on the streets in the seventies, cracking safes, getting in fistfights, shooting smack and getting tossed into juvie hall. Think a more elaborate and bleaker version of the Basketball Diaries.

Another Day in Paradise concerns fourteen-year old Bobbie, a streetwise junkie who robs vending machines and steals cars to survive. He’s accompanied by his seventeen-year old girlfriend Rosie, a molestation victim with a masochistic streak. After a hustle ends with Bobbie nearly beaten to death by a security guard, he’s nursed back to life by Mel, a dishonorably discharged army medic turned big-time criminal boss. Together with his neurotic Jewish girlfriend Syd, Mel takes Bobbie and Rosie under his wing and they embark on a career of robbing banks and dealing drugs in Chicago.

Paradise works because unlike Frey’s work, it’s dripping with verisimilitude. Little lived this story when he was a kid, and it shows. His prose rolls off the page street hustler-style, punching you in the gut until you double up on the ground wheezing. The dialogue between Bobbie, Rosie and their partners in crime is fast, funny and as accurate as you can get for seventies hoods.

There’s also no sentimentality in Paradise. Little is smart enough to know that morals are for churls. His writing depicts the violence and brutality of the criminal life without a drop of the bathos that defines the kinds of books that old lady book clubs love. No matter how many people around him get killed, how many people he has to kill himself, how low he has to go, Bobbie never learns anything. There’s no pot of gold at the end of his rainbow. Even when his luck finally runs out at the end of the book, Bobbie knows that as long as he’s chasing his addiction, he’ll never escape the criminal life.

You can see why James Frey was so successful in robbing Little’s grave. Another Day in Paradise would never make Oprah’s book club because it doesn’t reaffirm bourgeois prejudices. It doesn’t give the schoolmarms what they want to hear; mawkish racial reconciliation, drugs are bad, mmmkay? preening, and overdramatized death. From encounters with violent neo-Nazis to a run-in with a flamboyantly gay Chicano boss named Jewels, Paradise depicts the criminal underworld in all of its ugliness and ignominy.

For that reason, you owe it to yourself to read Another Day in Paradise. It’s a sick, funny, dark and exhilarating journey through a poorly-understood part of America. An honest portrayal of a world that few survive. An exemplary work by a talented writer who died too young.

love somehow blossoms through the venting of the past living ...
By Cesar ENG 106
A raw novel of drugs and wrongdoings, based on the life of the author, Eddie Little. The narrator is only a child, 14 years of age, which when you think about it is truly miserable. The novel begins and he is a speed freak and thief. After getting into a serious fight with a security guard during a sloppy robbery, he meets Melvin, an experienced thief and junky. The two take to one another, and take off with their "girlfiends" on a crime streak led by inside tips on burglary jobs. Through the harsh, lavish living, love somehow blossoms through the venting of the past living Bobbie and Rosie can relate to. The characters are interesting and the story is irresistible as they live in constant search of their next burglary target to maintain their ridiculous drug, alcohol and luxury habit.

Whip Smart: The True Story of a Secret Life, by Melissa Febos

A dark, wild, powerful memoir about a young woman's transformation from college student to professional dominatrix

While a college student at The New School, Melissa Febos spent four years working as a dominatrix in a midtown dungeon. In poetic, nuanced prose she charts how unchecked risk-taking eventually gave way to a course of self-destruction. But as she recounts crossing over the very boundaries that she set for her own safety, she never plays the victim. In fact, the glory of this memoir is Melissa's ability to illuminate the strange and powerful truths that she learned as she found her way out of a hell of her own making. Rest assured; the reader will emerge from the journey more or less unscathed.

From Publishers Weekly
Febos's candid, hard-slogging debut about her four years working as a dominatrix at a midtown Manhattan dungeon cuts a sharp line between prurience and feminist manifesto. Having grown up on Cape Cod, Mass., then dropped out of high school before moving to New York City and enrolling in the New School in the fall of 1999, Febos slipped into drug use and needed a way to finance it. An attractive law-school graduate neighbor in her Brooklyn apartment building mentioned that she worked as a domme, and Febos decided to give it a go. She spanked grown men, professionals, fathers, and rabbis, sometimes inserted enemas, sodomized them with dildos, and otherwise verbally humiliated them, all for $75 an hour, plus tips. At first, Febos managed the grueling, unsavory work while high on heroin and cocaine, and gained a tremendous sense of confidence, even invincibility at being able to justify her livelihood as one of the few well-paid acting gigs in this city. In time, she also became addicted to her job; she eventually joined AA to help get clean of drugs, but kicking her addiction to sadomasochism was harder, and in this emotionally stark, excoriating work, Febos mines the darkest, most troubling aspects of human interaction. Review

“In her provocative debut…Febos pulls no punches as she describes in minute, and at times horrific, detail her working life…In lesser hands this could be a maudlin, salacious tale, but Febos's electrifying prose and unremitting honesty continually challenge the reader. Expertly captures grace within depravity.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Febos's debut about her four years working as a dominatrix at a midtown Manhattan "dungeon" cuts a sharp line between prurience and feminist manifesto…In this emotionally stark, excoriating work, Febos mines the darkest, most troubling aspects of human interaction.” ―Publisher's Weekly

“Febos can really write, and it is the narrative voice she inhabits, at once honest and dispassionate, curious and even idealistic, that turns a timeworn story into a smart, provocative thrill-ride of a book…For all its jaw-dropping shock value...Whip Smart is, in the end, a treatise on the psychology of sex and power, subversion and submission―humanity.” ―David Goodwillie for The Daily Beast

“Memoirs about salacious adventures have two requirements: they must be generous with the goods and astute with the analysis. Febos delivers on both, and with relish. No salty detail escapes her eye or goes unexamined. Febos is too self-aware to not see her past clearly, and too talented a writer to not make it fascinating.” ―The Economist

“Melissa Febos examines, with frankness, generosity, and unexpected grace, the four years she spent working as a dominatrix in a midtown Manhattan dungeon…her revelations are often funny, occasionally sad, and fearlessly candid.” ―San Francisco Bay Guardian

“Febos' journeying into the darkest corners of both her and others' minds is entertaining and enlightening; there are weird, eye-popping, sad, hilarious, and all-too-human episodes and encounters on almost every page. Febos writes of her own walk on the wild side like a seasoned, and chastened, pro.” ―Elle Magazine

“[Melissa Febos] ably dissects her own and others' psychological urges and sexual politics and presents it all in a way that renders the title apt. The memoir should be right at home next to Mary Karr, Nick Flynn and Alex Lemon on the bookshelf.” ―New York Press

“All memoirs are an attempt to follow a trail of breadcrumbs home, yet WHIP SMART steps off the path, into the wooded shadows, and names that part of ourselves that could linger there forever. Melissa Febos masterfully brings us into these unexpected, unsettling places, the least of which are the dungeons she so vividly―briefly―occupies. WHIP SMART is a wild, bright-eyed, ride home.” ―Nick Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of ANOTHER BULLSHIT NIGHT IN SUCK CITY

“WHIP SMART is remarkably honest, brave and provocative about growing up: the pleasures and perils of being visible, the temptations of being numb, and the weird kick of being desired.” ―Rachel Resnick, author LOVE JUNKIE

“Mesmerizing. A brave, darkly wild and powerful memoir, Melissa Febos's fearless journey through drugs and dungeons into the uncharted territory of true intimacy will shock, inspire, and leave you breathless. Don't even think about resisting.” ―Rachel Resnick, author LOVE JUNKIE

“Melissa Febos takes us by the hand and leads us into a curious, disturbing, and funny world of a dominatrix, and she does so with often startlingly beautiful, expansive prose. That would be engaging enough. But what's even more gripping is Febos' fierce intelligence as she examines herself inside it. A must read for anyone interested in enlarging his or her understanding of sexual politics.” ―Kerry Cohen, author of LOOSE GIRL

“Melissa Febos writes with lacerating wit and insight into the world of the professional dominatrix, saving the sharpest sting for herself. An unsparing, deep, and dazzling read.” ―Janice Erlbaum, author of GIRLBOMB & HAVE YOU FOUND HER

Interesting read, but the writer's voice is a little off-putting
By Mandy Alford
I picked this book up after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. I am a big fan of memoirs in general, and I have read many sex worker memoirs, though this is the first I've read that solely focused on dominatrix work. I would have to say this book falls in the middle; it isn't the worst memoir, but it certainly isn't the best. For me, the writer came off as pretentious (hardly a chapter goes by without her mentioning her GPA or how much smarter she is than everyone else). I tend to prefer a writer (when it comes to memoirs) who can bring across the gravity of a situation, but is also able to be funny or even a little self-depreciating. Constantly boasting about any facet of your personality is a little off-putting, and it is pretty hard not to notice in this work.

I also feel in certain sections there were bits left out/glossed over or the writing was intentionally vague. I would often find I had unanswered questions in my mind, and Miss Febos would go off on her own (untrained) psychoanalysis of herself or speak at length about her addiction, which was honestly not as interesting to me. I understand this is a memoir about her, but it is also marketed foremost as a dominatrix memoir. I assumed the path to sobriety and AA meetings would play a smaller role than they did. I left the book feeling as though I should find another memoir by a dominatrix if I want to have a more thorough understanding of the profession in general, and clients in particular. I also think it would be more interesting to have a conversation or interview with Miss Febos than to read her book.

disappointing.
By H. Johnson
i was really looking forward to reading this book; i have one dear friend who loved it, and the author and i share common friends and even attended the same college. sadly and frustratingly, the book left me underwhelmed and exasperated. i finished it just to make it end, and so i could move onto something else.

'whip smart' has potential: the subject matter is intriguing. febos is to be commended for revealing an aspect of her past that may be seen as controversial, judged with disdain. there are a handful of beautifully woven passages. that, however, is where my praise ends. as others have already noted, her voice was offputting, haughty, entitled. it seemed to me she turned to drugs and other sundry dangerous/stupid lifestyle choices because the world bored her, and she was 'too intelligent' to endure it, to withstand the stupidity of everyone around her without drowning herself in substances. every time she casually tossed in some reference to 'harvard' or her 4.0 GPA, which, she repeated often, she maintained while high out of her mind and juggling a demanding domming schedule, i liked her less, cared less about her as a character. the constant dimestore psychoanalysis was beyond aggravating. the grammatical errors were numerous. the story was poorly constructed, didn't flow well. bottom line, i couldn't empathize with her; her struggles were self-induced; she came from a privileged, loving family and there was nothing wrong with her life that she didn't create herself. the book stretched my patience whisper thin; i could hardly finish it.

Creative Non Fiction vs Memoir - The contrived "turning point" and rehasing the Feminine Mystique
By crewelmoi
Whip Smart: A MemoirPlot spoiler warning!

I typically do not like or trust memoir as a genre. As a writer/artist, I take issue with the memoir claim that it is "true" or more truthful than creative non fiction. I find the opposite to be true. Memoirs are often times prefaced that they are a retelling of events in a creative way, and are skewed, jumbled, out of time with the actual events, and combine people to make the story more coherent and cohesive. Well, that's creative non fiction. And, memory is faulty. Memory alone creates some of the best non published works.

Memoir is a setup for the contrived "turning point" wherein the protagonist redeems her or himself, typically finds God, and in this case like so many others, finds a good man to make her life complete. I'm not applauding, Febos, you're pandering to get published.

The start of the book was very promising but the language became very bulky/overdone and stuck to that type of writing that I find tedious - telling us, not taking us there to experience it. All those creatively worded sentences seemed to pack a punch - but when I stopped to think about them, break them down, analyze them - they really didn't have any meaning. I know all the big words, but transporting me to an experience is much more powerful. Instead, I felt turned off and I started to really dislike Melissa/Justine. Was that Febos' goal? No, I don't think I can give her that much credit as an author. It is evident that she was instead trying to control and impress us, to be righteous, to be smarter. It was cold and did not further the art.

The story was a familiar tale of the Feminine Mystique. I felt duped into being intrigued and hoping for more, but what I got was a self-victimizing control freak who was obsessed with her relationships with men, her sexuality/being perceived and valued as sexy and powerful, and a painful floundering in abject poverty of love, insight, and self acceptance in order to appear independent.

She made herself out to be a genius. That's the trouble with talking about yourself and writing a "memoir" with a turning point and all the self-discovered resolutions. Lots of women get 3.9 GPAs under extremely adverse conditions (that they did not choose) and with far less resources. I didn't care to keep hearing it over and over. I never saw her struggle with it. We only heard her take it for granted that she would do well. We never went to class with the dayshift domming Melissa. It seemed superfluous, like she was taking the opportunity to be superior, but without proof. To brag. Again, I doubt this was an artistic intention. I was actually happy to hear Melissa got turned down to those first four grad schools. Finally, it seemed, something real. That's real-life. The monotonous job with the horrid office manager and the feeling that there is no end, no way out was more interesting than the should I/shouldn't I leave well enough alone with the dungeon.

As the story neared the end, the text got denser (with less actual meaning), the shared experiences became fewer, and the self congratulatory spirit became more prominent. Melissa found her answers, she turned to a higher power, she got her dream job of teaching and published writer, she lunched with her pregnant ex domme friend, and giggled over fond memories of torturing people. But, the part that made it all terribly impossible for me to embrace was that her happiness, resolve, and purpose hinged on Barrett - that most awesomely different and loving relationship, unlike any other she'd ever had. Really? Shame on you, Febos. It isn't that I wanted Melissa to be unhappy, fail, remain a domme, relapse on cocaine and/or heroin, or divulge more lurid sex tales from the darkness - not at all...well, maybe a bit (the turn of power with Larry was really interesting and I was imagining that perhaps a near death experience as his sub would be the crux of change). I just have to say, if you're gonna contrive a turning point and "make it all worth something", I'd think that as a good writer, an Alumna of a women's college, a self-proclaimed Feminist and intellectual, you wouldn't hinge it all on a neatly-summed-up-suburban-romantic-relationship (all by the ripe age of...what, 29?).

I'd like to edit this book. I'd like to flog it a bit. I wonder if there will be a follow up in about 15 years. That, I would like to read. Perhaps it will be classified as creative non-fiction and we will get more truth, less market-driven schmaltz.

I give it three stars because I did find the opening captivating and promising. Some of the simple sentences were breathtaking. The description of panic (in the ocean) was chilling. And there were other moments when Febos "let go" - where the prose was more experimental, less rigid, fluid, and took me there.

I take two stars away for the pandering drivel, not taking us there (she was dating? she had a live-in bf? what?), heavy use of the words mesmerize/ing and vegetarianism and vestibule (we get it - dungeon/BDSM, OK, OK, OK), the many typos/syntax/improper word choices and convoluted language, and for using "oversize" instead of "oversized".

National Geographic Concise History of Science and Invention: An Illustrated Time Line, by National Geographic

From the ancient conquest of fire and the first turn of a wheel to the latest in scientific leaps toward the stars, this easy-access history offers a panoramic perspective on humankind’s restless quest for the laws, theories, and tools by which we can grasp and master our universe.

This concise, concentrated, consistently organized look at our species’ key scientific and innovative achievements spans all human history, presenting ten distinct eras from the first glimmers of intelligence to the cutting-edge technologies of the modern world. Within these intuitive divisions, all human scientific endeavors and achievement are divided into four general fields of inquiry and arrayed into four basic geocultural regions for easy comparison in a logical, systematic grid format highlighted by 350 photographs, maps, illustrations, and diagrams that add graphic emphasis to key information. Special two-page feature spreads explore the most revolutionary developments in greater depth; compelling, expertly composed essays and memorable quotations add sparkle; and informative sidebars provide specifically focused items of information about particular inventions, ideas, or themes. Completing this comprehensive approach, an extensive glossary explains unfamiliar terms, and a detailed index makes it a simple matter to follow a particular field or process from its origin through its complete cross-cultural evolution. This is a reference as usefully accessible as it is inherently fascinating.

From Booklist
This superbly illustrated source is a time line of important discoveries and inventions in human history. Photos, illustrations, and sidebars enliven the display of important dates. The material is up to date. For example, the last sidebar discusses the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. The chapters survey humanity's history from the origins of science to the modern world. The time line forms the bulk of the book, and content is organized by era; by region (Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, Africa and the Middle East); and by the categories “Astronomy and Math,” “Biology and Medicine,” “Physical Sciences,” “Engineering and Inventions,” and “World Events.” This arrangement makes it easy to compare, for example, discoveries in biology and medicine around the globe, 1735–1749. Special essays on important people (such as Benjamin Franklin) or discoveries (such as the automobile) add value. Photo credits and additional readings are located before the index. This title could be used to replace The Timetables of Science: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Science (1988) or to update the Chronology of Science: From Stonehenge to the Human Genome Project (2002). The topical essays and wonderful photos and illustrations make this source useful as a circulating book as well as a reference book. --Gilbert Taylor

Seven Scientific Turning Points That Changed the World

From the new book, National Geographic Concise History of Science and Invention: An Illustrated Time Line

1. The World’s First City

The settlement at atal Hyk in Anatolia (modern Turkey) dates from about 6000 B.C.E. at the latest. The houses butted closely together and had flat roofs, reached by means of ladders. The people grew crops and irrigated the fields. They supplemented their diet by hunting animals. They wove cloth, made baskets and clay pots, and tanned hides to make leather. Nearby volcanoes produced a hard, glasslike obsidian, which the people of atal Hyk made into knives and other tools. The obsidian was also traded with neighboring peoples. Each house had a religious shrine decorated with figurines and the heads and horns of animals. The dead were left outside exposed to the elements before their remains were buried under the houses.

2. The Library at Alexandria

The greatest collection of documents in classical times was kept in a library in Alexandria, northern Egypt. The library was founded by pharaoh Ptolemy I Soter (r. 323–283 B.C.E.) at the beginning of the third century B.C.E. and built up by his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus (r. 283–46 B.C.E.). Established as part of the research “department” of the Alexandrian Museum, it had a smaller section, the Serapeum, located in the nearby Temple of Serapis that was established by Ptolemy III Euergetes (r. 246–22 B.C.E.). The hundreds of thousands of vellum and papyrus scrolls included nearly all the works of the Greek poets and dramatists, based originally on copies of the works in Aristotle’s library in Athens. The large staff included translators, editors, and scribes, who kept adding texts to the collection. Fire damaged part of the library in 269 C.E., and rioting during a civil war led to its final destruction. The Serapeum was pillaged by a Christian mob in 391.

3. Avicenna

The first European printing of the Canon of Medicine was a milestone in the development of medicine. Its author, Ibn-Sina—whose name was Latinized as “Avicenna” for publication in a field still dominated by the ideas of ancient Roman and Greek physicians—was a Persian philosopher and physician. He was born in a village near Bokhara (now Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan). He studied there and traveled widely. He learned all the classical Arab texts and mastered astronomy, Greek, mathematics, and all the available texts on medicine. At age 18 he became a court physician, then vizier (advisor) at the Buyid court in Hamadan, and from 1024 was physician to several sultans. As well as introducing the works of Aristotle to the Islamic world, Ibn-Sina also wrote more than 100 works on science, philosophy, and religion. His pioneering medical work, however, was his most important contribution to the spread of knowledge. The Canon of Medicine, written in 1000, remained a standard medical textbook for centuries. It contains instructions for testing medications, guidelines for diagnosing disease by examining the patient, and advice to surgeons to learn anatomy from observation and dissection, rather than from textbooks.

4. Quinine

The isolation of the chemical compound quinine by French chemists Pierre Pelletier and Joseph Caventou in 1820 was a breakthrough with wide-reaching consequences in medicine and politics. Quinine is a compound found in the bark of the cinchona tree in South America. For centuries it was used by the Quechua peoples of Peru as a muscle relaxant to suppress shivering, and missionaries who saw this use brought the bark back to Europe in the 17th century, believing it would relieve the shivering associated with malarial fevers. It proved highly effective, not only stopping the shivering but also halting the advance of the disease. With the isolation of the active chemical component in 1820 quinine could be produced in large quantities and more easily administered. Tropical regions in which malaria was prevalent and therefore inhabitable to Europeans, who have no natural immunity, were now open for colonization, starting the “scramble for Africa” as European powers fought to take control of sub-Saharan Africa.

5. Safe Anesthetics

For many centuries a major impediment to safe surgical procedures was the problem of pain. The intense pain that accompanied surgery before the introduction of reliable anesthetics not only caused considerable distress to the patient, but also made the surgery more dangerous. The patient’s involuntary movements and the need to finish the surgery quickly increased the likelihood of potentially fatal mistakes. Anesthetics such as opium, cocaine, and mandrake had always been available but were not reliable: an underdose or overdose was too easily administered. Sometimes the anesthetic would be insufficient to dull pain; at other times it would kill the patient. The discovery of new anesthetics—including ether, chloroform, and nitrous oxide—in the mid-19th century improved the situation, but almost as important was the methodical research into anesthetic techniques and dosages conducted during this time. Physicians such as John Snow (1813–1858)—better known for identifying the cause of cholera—published dosage advice and designed apparatus for administering these new anesthetics safely to patients of all ages and body sizes.

6. Insulin

Produced in the pancreas by cells called the islets of Langerhans, insulin is a hormone that enables body cells to take up the blood sugar glucose. Glucose is used as an energy source by the body. If the body cannot make insulin, type I diabetes mellitus results. In 1921 Canadian physiologist Frederick Banting (1891–1941) isolated insulin from dogs and found that injecting it cured the symptoms of diabetes in a dog that had had its pancreas removed (and therefore could not produce its own insulin). Using a purer extract from calves, Banting and coworkers successfully treated terminally ill children with type I diabetes the following year. Purified animal insulin was soon available for sale. By the early 1980s insulin could be made by genetically modified bacteria containing the human insulin gene. Banting received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1923 for his discovery.

7. Microwave Ovens

Self-taught American engineer Percy Spencer (1894–1970), who worked for the company Raytheon, had the idea for a microwave oven after noticing that a candy bar had melted while he was making a radar set in the 1940s. Raytheon patented his idea in 1947. A few cumbersome models were made, but it was not until 1967 that the first domestic microwave was marketed. Microwave ovens use microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules in food. They cook quickly, efficiently, and safely. Since the late 1960s, the ovens have become smaller, more powerful, and easier to use. More than 90 percent of U.S. households now have a microwave oven.

Fascinating Book, Even For Non-Science People
By Paige Turner
This wonderfully illustrated, well-organized book may win over even the least scientifically minded. For people interested in science and invention, it provides hours of fascination. The drawings, photographs and timelines are interesting and beautiful. The writing style is lively and interesting, much more accessible than any standard science textbook. If I were teaching science to kids, I would use this book. It captivated both my 9-year-old daughter and me.

The short vignettes on each page that described a famous scientist or inventor were especially interesting. Their stories come to life as we learn personal details about them and their lives. The photography is excellent, up to the National Geographic standard of excellence. The way they put the advances in science in a timeline perspective was enlightening. Some inventions we think of as new actually pre-dated other inventions by centuries. It is fascinating and mind-bending to think about how people saw the world before much of modern science existed. More fascinating still is the inability of humans to foresee what amazing inventions and discoveries are yet to occur.

Amazing coffee table book
By Robert Cowper
Let me get this out of the way first, this IS NOT a book that you will just "pick up" and read...it's meant to be a coffee table book...if you're hoping to start at page 1, read through and know everything about science and invention, look for another title!!!

I haven't, obviously, read the book from cover to cover, but have poked and prodded around aimlessly and have enjoyed it thoroughly...some of the stuff is superfluous and has no bearing on our lives (does it matter when Voltaire wrote Candide? Not really, the important part is that he did), but if you're a fun fact and *useless* information kinda fan, this is for you

as i was reading, i couldn't help but think that this book would come in handy for anybody studyinng to be on jeopardy or some trivia show...i suggest doing like i am, and making a point to pick it up for 5min a day and read a passage to learn something new each day

great buy so far, would definitely recommend to any avid science or technology readers
