Michael Pocock (D.Miss., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is chair and senior professor of world missions and intercultural studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. I bought this book for a class on missions. The content it good but some of the formatting is out of whack. It isn't consistently bad throughout the book. The case studies seem to be the worst. Here is an excerpt from one of the case studies.

"How could an Amer can comp y this n workers? Wasn't America supposed to be a Chistian nation? Weren't the owners of this business Christians themselves? How could they simply dump dozens of people--people with families--so i pu su t of greater profit? Wasn't America full of Christians? Couldn't they tell these companies how badly it hurts when they pursue free-market policies ? Weren't there any rules against creating jobs in other countries, raising people's hopes, and then dashing them h Maybe he ndian Labor Board would have something to say to the American company!"

Good book. It goes into different trends and contemporary issues when it comes to missions. Some of the subjects covered are globalization, postmodernism, contextualization, majority world christianity, etc...It is written by evangelical missiologists from the west. This is an awesome book. Get it.

A Worthy Little Book

Lovely and enjoyable and illuminating book, with chapters on six different names and conceptions of beauty.

However, to experience its merits you must clear away some obstacles. This is not a scholarly book, so do not expect it to be one or you will see only its faults. It is not even a collection of essays. The book is written in a very personal voice, and it is more conversational than anything else, with the stance and tone changing the way it might in a conversation. Sartwell also writes in a more unrestrained way than most, and although the two are quite different in other respects, in this he reminds me of the critic David Hickey.

The rewards of this book are not meager. Sartwell talks us through Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Japanese, Navajo, and English names for beauty. His running commentary is full of surprising connections and juxtapositions, often taken from his own life. Although he differentiates the different approaches to beauty, his own mind is strongly synthetic, and there is an underlying conviction, supported in his examples, that these different beauties are all active in our experience in some way. This is one significant difference between contemporary scholarship, in which magnifying differences is a primary (and sometimes sole) merit, and Sartwell's writing, which differentiates in order to magnify relatively neglected and diminutive dimensions of (at least potentially) common experience.

The upshot was that Sartwell actually helped me to differentiate some aspects of beauty that I had conflated--and to enjoy them more.

Revealing the Known

Impressive in so many ways: a clear focus that is simple yet profound and important. What a clear entry into a lively, elegant and learned discourse: six words in six languages and cultures for beauty. And what a delightful ride on a high-wire intellectural strand in Crispin Sartwell's facile and eclectic mind...it is a delight to share in his vast learning...and to be spoken to in crisp, contemporary language. The meaning of beauty is in our reaction to it, and the opportunity to share in Sartwell's reactions is an aesthetic holiday.

Be sure to browse before you buy

You may find this to your liking, but I wish I hadn't wasted my money. I tried for a couple of hours to get into this, but I simply could not read it.

Not that it's hard to understand. Quite the contrary. But I found it precious, affected, and silly. Not to mention self-indulgent. Other than that, though . . .

Sartwell defines beauty as "the object of longing." He tells us he is "less concerned to defend that as a definition than to use it as a basis for trying to find something common to certain kinds of human experiences and relations to things." Since we long for many things that are not beautiful, and commonalities between experiences and objects of longing may therefore have little to do with beauty, I find this approach less than promising.

And indeed, Sartwell stretches the idea of beauty beyond any normal meaning, and he makes it useless as a category of discernment. For instance, Picasso's Guernica is not-and is not supposed to be-beautiful. It's a horror, and in its horror lies its grandeur-it's supposed to horrify us. To call it beautiful because it illustrates the satisfaction of the longing for power is to corrupt the term "beauty" and miss the point of the artwork.

As for the self-indulgence, Sartwell has merely collected snippets of his reflections. He says this is "a book of moments, and can be dipped into rather than read straight through, though I also hope that the accumulation of moments displays a kind of structure that could yield a coherent set of experiences." Well, if you invite someone to dip into your moments, you'd better be a genius, if they are to find such visits worthwhile. Sartwell isn't. One wonders whether he didn't bother to use his many moments to generate a coherent set of thoughts because that task was beyond him, or because he just couldn't be bothered. Either way, Sartwell's belief that his fragments of reflection are worth our while betrays a self-confidence that the twenty-five pages or so I pondered do not justify.

And frankly, you have to puzzle over the perceptiveness of anyone anyone who refers to "the beauty of Jennifer Lopez" as "the skinniest common denominator of nubile beauty."

About the Author
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.

Judge Dee will keep you guessing

One of the most interesting things about Van Gulik's Judge Dee books is that the Judge is usually juggling three or four mysteries at once. Your brain definitely stays awake as he shifts his attention from one to the other. "The Red Pavilion" takes place on "Paradise Island", a town in which the main industry is the selling of pleasure--sort of a Las Vegas of ancient China. Between current murders and murders of the past, the Judge has his hands full, and with only one of his usual four assistants he is a busy guy.
I enjoyed the interesting characters of the various courtesans, bouncers, businessmen, and mysterious beggars no end. His Excellency is not beyond making a guess at a solution and then proving himself wrong, which is quite refreshing in detective novels. If you like detective novels combined with ancient culture, you may well enjoy these books.

When Judge Dee meets Autumn Moon she is wearing a translucent robe. She strolls onto the veranda of the secluded suite of rooms where Dee is staying for night and flirts atrociously with him. Dee remains polite. He has been forced to break his journey at the resort of Paradise Island but he has every intention of going on in the morning.

Then he learns that the suite of rooms, the Red Pavilion, has been the scene of murder in the past. And lately, Lee Lien, a distinguished scholar of a distinguished family, apparently committed suicide there. When Judge Dee returns from a dinner with the local notables, he discovers the body of Autumn Moon on the floor of the locked bedchamber!

Judge Dee was a real magistrate and official of the Tang dynasty. In his fictional series about this great man, Robert Van Gulik searches out notable exploits and tales of the Chinese Imperial system and presents them to modern readers in a form that entertains as well as enlightens. Most of Gulik's Judge Dee stories take place with the magistrate in his district. This one shows Judge Dee on the road, acting as an assessor for a fellow magistrate. The setting is unique in all the Judge Dee books: a pleasure resort where the usual mores and laws are somewhat suspended. The denouement of this fascinating novel brings to mind the adage: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

clever and occasionally humorous mystery

Judge Dee, magistrate of Poo-yang, eagerly heads home after an unpleasant hearing in the capital surrounding some chicanery and illicit sex at a Buddhist monastery in the earlier The Chinese Bell Murders: A Judge Dee Detective Story. Dee finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of investigator into an alleged suicide in the pleasure district of Paradise Island in the neighboring district. The contrast between the "anything-goes" attitude of the denizens of Paradise Island and the moralizing, strait-laced Judge Dee sets up quite a few amusing scenes.

Judge Lo Kwan-Choong, the magistrate of the neighboring district of Chin-hwa, returns to add comic spice to The Red Pavilion. He also provides the reason for Dee's need to investigate in the first place. The womanizing sybarite Magistrate Lo first appeared in The Chinese Bell Murders, the second Judge Dee novel released in the United States (although not the second chronologically). As befits the irresponsible and careless Lo, he dashes off from Pleasure Island to the city of Chin-hwa to avoid some unpleasantness, and Lo asks Judge Dee to finish off the investigation into the suicide of a brilliant young scholar named Lee Lien, who had just been appointed a member of the Imperial Academy and had everything to live for. Author Robert van Gulik crafts The Red Pavilion as a locked-door mystery, which, at first, throws Judge Dee off the scent. It's only after yet another murder that Dee realizes that Lee's death was no suicide.

Although resentful at Lo's fecklessness, the long-suffering, meticulous Dee ignores Lo's suggestion that he just sign off on the suicide and looks into that matter. During the several days that Judge Dee and his trusty lieutenant Ma Joong investigate, they not only learn the truth about Lee's death but also resolve the murder of the beautiful but cruel courtesan Autumn Moon and yet another murder committed 30 years earlier. In those two cases, the victims, like Lee, died behind locked doors inside the self-same Red Pavilion. Readers won't guess the murderer until the penultimate chapter.

The Red Pavilion also shows a sweet side to the normally devil-may-care Ma Joong. To say anything more would spoil the novel.

For those new to the series, author Robert van Gulik, a Dutch diplomat, linguist and Asian scholar, relied on a real-life Chinese magistrate during the T'ang Dynasty named Ti Jen-chieh for his Judge Dee novels. Simplifying the magistrate's name to Judge Dee Jen-djieh, van Gulik first introduced the West to Judge Dee in Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (Dee Goong An) (Detective Stories), first published in 1949 (although not translated into English until 1976).

Quite possibly the best systems book out there

A fellow flight instructor introduced me to this book and it is by far the best book for general systems on aircraft I have ever seen. From piston to turbine, many system basics are covered. The writing is just technical enough for you to understand the concepts and theory behind the system being explained, without bogging down in minute details. This is a book every pilot should OWN (especially those with career aspirations) much less read. Some of the book is a little dated, but it's still an excellent reference for all aviators.

Horibal Book Unless you already know what it is teaching.

This book, as it is written by a PHD, is not conducive to learning new information. I could see it being good for someone looking to review all this knowledge, but for me there is no logical order to the writing and the book skips around. The chapter questions are ambiguous and over all if I was not having to read this book for a class, I would have burned it by now. I find it to be a total waste of time.

Excellent book

You want a good understanding of how systems work in aircraft and this book provides it. The only downside is I feel there are a few basic elements missing, I felt there should have been a more complete explanation of how a vacuum system works. When looking in the index there is only one reference to the word vacuum and it is Vacuum Pumps. For a system that is so integral to instrumentation I expected more and had to search the net for more details on this aircraft system.
