This is an extraordinary book and one of the few good translations of the Yoga Sutra available. It was written by a Sanskrit scholar and the head of a living tradition in such a way as to reveal many of the mysteries of life and living. It gives English language explanations of the ancient text as well as definitions for complex Sanskrit terms and ideas. This is the real deal. There is more solid information about Sankhya Yoga in appendix C than you will find in most other books and yet it is not hard to read or difficult to understand. It is a practical book you can wrap your life around.

A Book that brings clearity to the Yoga Sutras

This is one of the best books I have ever read on the Yoga Sutras. Pandit Rajamin Tigunait's writing is so clear and understandable. He clearly unlocks some of the secrets of the Yoga Sutras. A must read for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of the Vedic teachings.

They are a genuine pop sensation, with millions of albums of dub/hip-hop/punk sold and concerts mixing animation and live musicians. Rise covers all that but from the "perspective" of the band, with the human creators cast as bit players and the focus squarely on the rise, fall, and rise of four scrappy toonz. If you LOVE Gorillaz, you have to get this

This book includes the entire collection of Gorillaz artwork up to Demon Days, (so no Plastic Beach artwork), plus extra artwork created exclusively for the book. Besides the artwork, the book includes the mostly-fiction-semi-nonfiction-pseudo-biography of the Gorillaz starting at the very beginning of the band's coming together and going on to explain how the Gorillaz became "biggest virtual band in the world."

For huge fans, this is something I think you should definitely check out--especially if you like the animation and artwork side of the Gorillaz. If you only ever liked the music and never really dug the music videos or "band members," there isn't much here for you.

The story side of the book is conveyed mostly through "band interviews" and from the characters' perspective. It's not written like a novel. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlitt helped organize the material and storylines, but it was written by a third person under Albarn and Hewlitt's guidance. Through the story of the band members, reality sometimes peeks through in the form of interviews and name drops of artists who collaborated with Damon Albarn and tour dates and locations, etc.

The interaction and personalities of the "band members"--2D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle---are entertaining and often funny, and the convoluted plot is pretty great by itself. Also great is that every non-print Gorillaz "product"--music videos, mini cartoons, songs, albums, band interviews--are all referenced, so you can look them up online and watch/listen if you missed them before.

In one big, beautiful book. You get the low-down on the songs, the stories, the characters... But the best part of all is: THE ART. Jamie Hewett's art is just amazing, it radiates with zany energy. This book is a must-have for any Gorillaz fan.
Man, I remember the first time I saw a Gorillaz video. It was in a shopping mall, and my mom was checking out. They were playing Dare and Feel Good Inc. Being the young, innocent kid that I was, I felt somehow that I wasn't allowed to watch these weird, adult-looking videos. But I was entranced by them. Years later, I randomly found the videos again on the Tube, and I've been a fan ever since.

This is a fantastic academic achievement. Well written and cuts into controversies and clinical essentials. Extensive references of major trials and metaanalyses, still easy to read with clear interpretations of the results. Clear presentation of the essential mechanisms without becoming unnecessarily detailed for the non-research reader. Practically very useful and full of details that will optimize most internists and cardiologists prescriptions to get a little bit more out of the medications that so many physicians prescribe on a daily basis.

I recommend this as an excellent resource for those who want to know the PK and PD of the drugs they prescribe, and research to back it up. Divided nicely and well organized. A very usable resource with excellent teaching sections, well written and easy to follow. Small enough to carry.

David G. Hartwell is a Senior Editor at Tor/Forge Books. He is the proprietor of Dragon Press, publisher and bookseller, which publishes The New York Review of Science Fiction. He is the author of Age of Wonders and the editor of many anthologies, including The Dark Descent, Masterpieces of Fantasy and Enchantment, The World Treasury of Science Fiction, Northern Stars, The Ascent of Wonder (co-edited with Kathryn Cramer), and a number of Christmas anthologies. Recently he edited his sixth annual paperback volume of Year's Best SF and co-edited the new Year's Best Fantasy. Not a good selection

The choices of stories in this book are not very good. Some of them are repeats of other anthologies. Others are do not present very original ideas. I couldn't really get into any stories in this book. It's average at best.

The stories in this book are more like an authors notes than finished work. With the exception of two stories in this collection, they appeared to be a rambling unconnected assortment of pointles writing exercises. Save your money.

Disappointing Anthology for the Turn of the Millennium

Science fiction is an immensely broad category. It encompasses stories as diverse as standard monster fare (the movie ALIEN, for example), social satire (the TV series THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN, the movie THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), farce (THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), adventure (STAR WARS) as well as more traditionally science oriented tales of our society (1984) or imaginary worlds far beyond ours (2001) and much more. Editing an anthology which proports to represent the best short science fiction published in a year must be an incredibly demanding task, and David Hartwell is to be commended for attempting to represent a fair share of this variety. But if this book genuinely represents the best of SF published in 1999, I have to wonder if some bizarre millennial fever didn't strike the SF world a bit early. As SF writers are, by definition, imaginative folks, did they as a group get a bit too worked up worrying about Y2K to concentrate on their writing? Well, of course not; and interestingly enough there is no looming sense of catastrophe in the vast majority of this anthology. Instead, the tales generally treasure our humanity over technology and offer a hopeful view of the future (with a few notable exceptions). And yet...
Hartwell's anthology is sizable, containing 25 short stories. Of these, less than half were memorable enough that as I write this review while looking at the table of contents, I actually remember the stories--this only a few days after completing the book. I'm definitely getting older, sure, and more crotchety; but as yet I've no noticable symptoms of Alzheimer's. The one word that comes to mind with regard to most of these stories is "ordinary".
However, about 10 of the stories were worth a read. Of these, the two best were Cory Doctrow's "Visit the Sins", portraying family relationships that developed after an attempt to cure Attention Deficit Disorder goes horribly awry; and Chris Lawson's "Written in Blood" was an engaging look at the border between faith and technology, with prejudice and hope entangling one another.
Robert Reed's "Game of the Century" posited a future in which genetic engineering gives us superhuman athletes, but more importantly explores how they would feel growing up as such. Sarah Zettel's "Kinds of Strangers" follows the psychological breakdown of the crew of a deep-space craft after a devastating equipment failure. Stephen Baxter's bleak "Huddle", about a future molded by genetic engineering and planetary catastrophe was easily the darkest story in the book. Curt Wohleber's "100 Candles" and Chris Beckett's "Valour" were genuinely well written, well conceived stories with interesting characters. Finally, translated from the Japanese, Hiroe Suga's "Freckled Figure" was a beautifully told tale that somehow bound together the spirit of ancient Japanese craftsmanship with the love of anime and technology that drives so much of Japan today.
For the sake of these stories, YEAR'S BEST SF 5 is worth a look. But if you really want great sci-fi, I'd HIGHLY recommend STARFISH by Peter Watts. I've just finished it and have to say it is the best sci-fi books I've read in many many years. I hope that David Hartwell is able to find fiction of that quality for future anthologies.

About the Author

Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh was the Director of the Refugee Studies Centre's International Summer School in Forced Migration between 2010 and 2012. Prior to joining the RSC, Elena was Senior Teaching Fellow in Development Studies and Research Fellow in Diaspora Mobilisation and International Security at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has also worked as a legal advisor for refugees in Cairo with AMERA-Egypt, as a refugee case-worker with Amnesty International Australia's Refugee Team, and as a legal clerk at the International Criminal Court, conducting research on crimes committed in Darfur (Sudan). She is Departmental Lecturer in Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Centre, and Junior Research Fellow in Refugee Studies at Lady Margaret Hall, both at the University of Oxford.

Gil Loescher is a long-established expert on international refugee policy. For over 25 years, he was Professor of International Relations at the University of Notre Dame in the United States and was a visiting fellow at Princeton University, LSE, Oxford and the Department of Humanitarian Affairs at the US State Department in Washington, D.C. In recent years he has been Senior Research Fellow, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford, Senior Fellow for Forced Migration and International Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and a senior researcher at the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. He is Visiting Professor at the Refugee Studies Centre, Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford.

Katy Long's research examines the politics of migration in conflict and crisis affected areas, focusing in particular on refugee movements and international "solutions" to forced migration crises. Katy has worked extensively with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, particularly in considering how access to migration channels might contribute to resolving refugees' exile. She is a Lecturer in International Development at the University of Edinburgh, having previously been a Lecturer at the Department of International Development, London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and a post-doctoral researcher at the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford.

Nando Sigona was previously a Senior Research Officer at the Refugee Studies Centre and Senior Researcher at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford. His research explores the impact of globalisation, migration and the human rights regime on meanings and practices of citizenship and non-citizenship in countries affected by significant population movements. He is particularly interested in statelessness, diasporas and the state; Romani politics and anti-Gypsyism; 'illegality' and the everyday experiences of undocumented migrant children and young people; and governance and governmentality of forced migration in the EU. He is a Birmingham Fellow at the School of Social Policy, University of Birmingham.

So disappointed in kindle edition!

So disappointed in kindle edition! I just downloaded the kindle edition of this book for a little story class on counting which I am teaching this morning. It was a desperate measure since I couldn't make it to the book store. Sadly, the kindle edition is practically useless. It is missing the rhyming words. At first I was just confused and thinking it wasn't as cute or clever as the ABC version. Then I got to the end and saw the back cover of the book which has the rhyming words in tact. Then it all clicked, this is missing words. Nothing rhyme, or very few anyway. Important words like "race y to the top of the apple tree" are missing. I will be contacting Amazon for a refund.

A must for fans of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

If you have a small child then there is a good chance that you will have lived through chicka chicka boom boom - which focuses on the alphabet, this is the companion book with a focus on numbers.

My son is 2 years old and we are working through his number identification skills and this is a great teaching aid, you get all the numbers up to 20 and then 30 - 90 are covered in tens. The pacing and tone s designed to capture a small persons ear and the bright colours help keep their attention. Both the start and end of the books have number lines that you can use with your child when not reading the book (in the same way as boom boom had the alphabet) We have found this really helpful when working on numbers
