Intimate Memories, Labor-intensive Recipes

Do get this book if you are a big Frida Kahlo fan. Her step-daughter's memories are somewhat interesting; it's a good read that sits with dignity on either a bedroom night stand or the coffee table or the cookbook shelf.
Don't get this book if you want to start to learn Mexican cooking. It's not a beginner's cookbook!
Do get this book if you have kitchen help and/or if you have some experience with Mexican ingredients (and access to them) and Mexican recipes/dishes. In Asia I have succeeded in making the smothered pork sandwiches (associated with a baptism Frida attended) and some of the other simpler recipes.
If you like the format of Like Water For Chocolate, you'll like this special book. Nicely illustrated with photos of all the food in beautifully styled presentation.
Bonus for art lovers: the cover and some of the illustrations are re-creations of paintings by Frida... tour de force still-life photography!

Artfull - Evocative - Nostalgic

Artfull, evocative, and nostalgic are three adjectives that can give a sense of what the reader will find in this book. Renowned photographer Ignacio Urquiza, and Marie-Pierre Cole teamed again to bring us "Las Fiestas de Frida y Diego". In it, through the superb photography of Ignacio Urquiza, you will be carried to the spaces that were central in the life of the artists. Soon after you start going through the pages of the book, you forget about the carefully explained recipies, and shift your attention to the profuse anecdotes collected by Marie-Pierre, directly from Diego's daughter, Guadalupe Rivera, and the sublime photography of Urquiza.

my favorite mexican cooking book

Amongst all mexican cooking books i bought over time, this is THE favorite one and i often return to it in pursue of inspiration. Besides the nice anectodes about Frida and Diego's life, i find this book invaluable because the recipes are very accurate and the photos match the real results that you get if you follow the instructions. Even if it is not a beginner's book, the recipes are well explained. You can even check out if i am cheating or not, just go to tlazolteotl.blogspot.com and have a look at the mexican recipes, most of them come from this very book, i.e. colchones de naranja, pipi�n blanco, pipi�n verde, flan de pi�ones, puntas de filete al alba�il and others!
If you like traditional mexican food there is no doubt, this book is a must-have.

technically wonderful

Authors have never been in the forest.

Just finished reading Part I of the text --every single last word. While I'm confident subsequent parts of this bloated textbook will demonstrate the authors are very good at math, Part I demonstrated: a) they have never been involved in an actual integrated resource planning exercise and b) they probably don't have much actual non-academic forestry experience. Also, c) the GIS and land classification section sorely needs to be updated for a modern audience, not circa 1970s.

Woe be it to the undergraduate forestry students that are taught from this vile textbook and asked on tests the asinine and poorly written questions that follow at the end of equally poorly written chapters.

This textbook should not be used when teaching Canadian integrated resource curriculum; save it for analytical and modelling classes.

Forest Management Textbook

I've used this as a textbook in a class on Forest Management. The book covers most topics in great detail, a little too verbose for undergraduate students, but it serves as a great reference after they graduate. If anything it is a little weak on valuation, but strong on modern methods of planning. It is not out of date as long as you supplement it with current developments.

About the Author
Thomas Gilovich is Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Center for Behavioral Economics and Decision Research at Cornell University. He has taught social psychology for 33 years and is the recipient of the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award at Cornell. His research focuses on how people evaluate the evidence of their everyday experience to make judgments, form beliefs, and decide on courses of action. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Dacher Keltner is Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught social psychology for the past 21 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award for Letters and Sciences. His research focuses on the prosocial emotions (such as love, sympathy, and gratitude), morality, and power. Other awards include the Western Psychological Association’s award for outstanding contribution to research, the Positive Psychology Prize for excellence in research, and the Distinguished Mentoring Award at UC Berkeley. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2008, the Utne Reader listed Dacher as one of the 50 visionaries changing the world.

Serena Chen is Professor of Psychology and the Marian E. and Daniel E. Koshland, Jr. Distinguished Chair for Innovative Teaching and Research at the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught social psychology for the past 18 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from Berkeley’s Social Science Division. Her research focuses on the impact of close relationships on the self and identity, and on the intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of social power. She is a fellow of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and is the recipient of the Early Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity. The American Psychological Society also identified her as a Rising Star.

Richard E. Nisbett is Theodore M. Newcomb Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and Research Professor at Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. He has taught courses in social psychology, cultural psychology, cognitive psychology, and evolutionary psychology. His research focuses on how people from different cultures think, perceive, feel, and act in different ways. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association and the William James Fellow Award of the American Psychological Society and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Fascinating insight into how we interact with each other

Social psychology, unlike plain old psychology, details how we humans interact with each other. Can people be influenced to falsely confess? Does the presence of someone else nearby make you work better or worse? What kind of techniques can you use to convince someone?

In this very descriptive textbook, the basics of social psychology are outlined and the relevant studies are summarized. I often feel that psychology textbooks get bogged down in the specifics of the study and lose sight of the bigger picture. I am happy to report that this textbook avoids that trap. Each chapter has a theme (e.g. "Attitudes") and a concluding review section to revisit new concepts.

We used this textbook for my Intro to Social Psych class, and I was very pleased with it. Yes, it's a hefty price, but paperback is probably still cheaper than the hardback version!

I never write reviews but I had to recommend this book that kept me awake until late nights

One of the most interesting books I have ever read! It`s not only a matter of personal interest though - they use incredible organization to keep us engaged. The chapters are divided by topics. First, they present a fascinating story of the particular topic and start the chapter by raising questions based on the story. The questions make us curious and they very often challenge our naive theories or common sense. Then, they proceed to answer the questions, showing the evolution of experiments. That is, they follow a line of argumentation, a quest of the researches that have tried to answer these questions, and many times the findings are contradictory! Or just apparently so, as you have to keep reading to find out what`s going on. And after arriving at the last updates on research, they show a well-rounded perspective, with cross-cultural comparisons and the effects of class, gender and so on. I never write reviews but I had to recommend this book that kept me awake until late nights! It will not only provide you with multiple perspectives on social psychology research, but also help you understand other people and better your own life, everyone should read it!

Worthwhile Is An Understatement - Coffee Is A Necessity

I've studied Gann and have read all his previous books and this one is the most useful of them all. As a Financial Astrologer I saw the direct evidence in print of his using what we call "Astronomic Indicators" though it is painfully incomplete - foolish of me to even consider he'd include his "grail" everyone wants to know! Astrology may or may not be that grail, but astrology is one of the great secrets in the stock and commodity markets. It's the knowledge many of the Wall Street 1% know but will never say aloud. No broker could ever tell his or her client to wait for Jupiter to be in Cancer before buying that homebuilder stock. It's a subject not unlike the secrets of the Masons, and Gann was one of them as well. 33rd Degree if I recall correctly.

The most you could gather from the limited amount of astrology for trading in this book, is this genius did indeed use planetary motion in predicting market movements. It's his handwriting. Gann associated with some of the more prominent astrologers of his time, Jayne and Johndro among them. If you do a search for Gann you'll find probably hundreds of websites who claim to know his techniques and would gladly sell them to you, but I wouldn't believe it. The best of what he used went to the grave with him. What others think he used, they are at best, guessing. The complete picture was likely discovered by a select few but they would never sell that information - they're making money with it by trading! It will be up to you to put together some of these pieces and give it your best shot.

For those of you who are traders and not astrologers, you don't at all need to know astrology to benefit from this book. If you're interested in astrology and the markets, pick up what's called an Ephemeris, or better yet, a copy of Solar Fire 8 astrology software if you're interested in learning his known methodology. Planet longitude equivalents to price are evident, but there is far more to it that is not in this book or anywhere else for that matter. The May 1948 Soybeans chart is perhaps the most complete publicly known example, though it's difficult to decipher as his penmanship was not that of a draftsman of his time - what would've helped immensely!

There's more to it than astrology of course. The book is a great asset in how his thinking process operated in the course of making trades. The magnitude of profit in his trades were astonishing and yet routine in his descriptions of them. Knowing how a master trader thinks and in describing details of his trades alone is a gold mine. You don't dismiss a man who over 45 years had 92% winning trades. This is not fiction, as it was witnessed and documented on the trading floor by Ticker Magazine in 1909.

The most intriguing part of the book for me was the part where not only his astrological indicators were shown, but also the various grids and squares of numbers for determining price and time, all drawn by hand. These include "The Square of Nine," "Square of Twelve" and the other various grids and circle graphs to include the octagon and the "NYSE Permanent Chart." The one on page 323 made me wonder if Gann had Asperger's Syndrome but was able live an otherwise normal life. It may just be his IQ and attention span dwarfs most mortals. When I think of what he could've done at that time with the computers we have now...

The upshot is the book is definitely a bargain for what you get. Just make sure you have a few boxes of K-Cups and your Keurig because you'll need it. You cannot read this book in a day or a weekend! This is more like a one-year college course, so don't rush! As odd as this may sound, you can't just read it and know what he's communicating. You'll need to actively visualize while he narrates his trades to fully understand his process. This is not a canned trading system by any means, but when you get to the end of the book, if you've taken good notes, you'll at the very least have learned swing trading from perhaps the greatest master trader of all.

I am still reading the book, trust me, Gann is not easy reading. However, compared to the other books I have read of Gann's, this one is definitely THE TRADING COURSE explaining his technique in detail. I would recommend it for any trader grasping to make sense of the moves any market makes. Since this book is titled by Gann as the Master Commodities Course, if you are not already familiar with the basics of his technique, you might read through it at first and wonder, what the hell is he talking about? But if you are familiar with the basics of his technique then this book should shed more light on those techniques and if you follow the rules suggested by Gann, a lot of the guess work normally associated with trading will disappear.

For the Gann fans, this book was definitely written by him. Mr Gann talks of angles, number charts and common sense trading rules. The rules that Gann built on over a long trading history and still so very relevant in today's markets. Mr Gann leads you in with the basics and builds on this base. This book does get somewhat "heavier" towards the end and careful study of what is being shown is a must. I found reading this book in sections and understanding what is being told before moving on but I still return to earlier sections and find something I missed. Hidden Gems ! This book could be used as a beginning and retained as your trading level increases, a must for the trading library. The thing that continues to hold me in awe of Mr Gann, is this man developed his charts, angles, and mathematics that are involved before the days of the electronic calculation devices.
