How can you control something that you are not conscious of like the subconscious

This book just changed my opinion about the Law of Attraction and made it seem so much more possible now. He claims that many of us are being controlled by our minds instead of controlling our minds. I found that especially enlightening because I've never really thought about it that way. How can you control something that you are not conscious of like the subconscious? Also, he explains why two people with the same desires do not get the same results (that chapter on karma blew my mind).

I liked how he acknowledges that he is not a scientist and doesn't try to force in science into his views, although he does show some examples from fields such as psychology to supplement his claims.

I felt a lot of care in the book, Nathan keeps cautioning us against the wrong use of the LOA and how it can turn out wrong and make the situation worse if we do not know what we are doing.

In case anyone was wondering, I've tried the plan he advocates and indeed, my life seems so much abundant now. No other New thought author actually teaches you HOW to be abundant! Nathan actually tells the mindset behind this abundance and how it relates to spiritual development as well.

If I could complain about anything, it was that sometimes the headings looked a bit "off" on my Kindle, but that's because I increased the font-size. Otherwise, this is a very fascinating read that you should try.

I love Esther Hicks, Bashar and Neville Goddard books and I feel that this book itself is great as it synthesizes a lot of confusing bits together into a coherent piece.

Unlike any other manifestation book

This was a powerful book. As the author, Nathan Miller states, it does have the very real possibility of its teachings backfiring dangerously if you don't read EVERY one of his sections in order. I don't say this to scare anyone, but we are powerful beings, and Nathan's truths convey that. Manual to manifestation is unlike any other book. Most manifestations books talk about abundance and 'feeling good' to attract what you want and only superficially. This one goes into depth, and dispels many myths and fallacies many 'gurus' espouse. Miller talks about desire, its incredible power, and how it relates to our thoughts in the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious. If you truly want to manifest a certain way of living, read this book and follow it to the letter. Five stars.

"The Real Secret"

Great book, I have been visualizing for a while and attracted many positive things in my life, but I am constantly trying to perfect my techniques. This book has been very eye opening, it has defined many things which I knew on an unconscious level. Systematic Manifestation should be the book to replace "The Secret".. If you want to start visualizing effectively, get this book, you won't go wrong, it will guide you step by step on manisfesting anything you want. A message to all those "passive people" : manifestation takes time and doesn't mean action isn't required from your side. Take Care.

Tab and Strum pattern

The problem with internet tabulature websites is you are never sure they are 100% right - as evidenced by dozens of 'versions' of the same song. As a kid growing up in the 70's I was a Croce fan by virtue of my parents being Croce fans. This book contains the chord tabulature, but also the finger style. In addition, each song contains a recommended strum pattern or picking pattern, one of the hardest things for novice guitar players to pick up, in my experience. This book was gold for the cost, I highly recommend it.

The Power of Longitudinal Research

Some of the oldest and most contentious debates on human beings centre around the relative influence of heredity (genetics), environment and individual voluntary action on growth and development. These include whether mental illness has genetic origins, what factors determine "success" in life, and whether adults continue to "develop" as they grow older (or whether all development happens before a certain age). These questions cross disciplinary boundaries as they involve concepts from psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and genetics.

Great thinkers like Freud and Erikson made significant contributions to these debates, but many of their contributions were based on intuitive theorizing rather than rigorous empirical evidence. With time and careful research, some of their theories have been upheld, and others disproved! The studies that have made the most impact are longitudinal studies in which a carefully chosen cohort of respondents was tracked periodically over an extended period of time.

The Harvard Grant Study

One of the most well known of these studies is the Havard Grant study which commenced in the late 1930s and early 1940s and continues till this day. The survivors of the cohort (who were Harvard sophomores when they were recruited) have now entered their 90s, and the data collected therefore allows several inferences to be drawn on adult development.

George F. Vaillant was the director of the Harvard Grant Study for over two decades. His latest book, The Triumphs of Experience, presents the latest findings. I found it a fascinating read as it not only uncovers new insights, but also questions some of the conclusions reached at earlier stages of the study. The Harvard Grant Study draws its conclusions from rigorous multivariate analysis, but Vaillant presents the findings with a distinctive and rare combination of statistical rigour and empathy for his subjects - in addition to tables containing the statistical results, there are profiles (disguised, of course) of different respondents of the study, and these give the reader a sense of being part of the study team.

The original design and subsequent evolution of the study show how much our models of adult development have changed over time. At the time the study started, physical constitution and mental health indicators were expected to be important predictors of subsequent progress of the study. Parental/family relationships and childhood upbringing were thought to be unimportant. Yet, the latest Harvard Grant Study findings show that loving relationships during childhood are important for longevity and success in life.

Findings of the Harvard Grant Study

Some of the important findings of this study reported in The Triumphs of Experience:
Individuals develop through their adult lives as well, not only upto the stage of adolescence.

The impact of childhood trauma decreases over time; more importantly, the positive experiences of a loving childhood have enduring impact.

Being well integrated and self-driving while young helps people live longer.

Divorce led to happier marriages than the bottom third of sustaining marriages.

Alcoholism had bigger negative impacts than measured by most previous studies. It accounted for more than half of the divorces in the Grant Study. The study shows that it is unlikely that alcoholics can return safely to social drinking, thereby upholding the methodologies followed by organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous.

The involuntary coping styles predicted by Freud exist, and they are important for human effectiveness.

Important Lessons for Management of Long-term Research Programs

The Harvard Grant Study is interesting from a research management perspective as well. Over its 70+ year lifespan so far, the study has transcended several research directors and team members, but the integrity of the study has not been compromised. George Vaillant estimates that about $ 20 million has been spent on the study over time, with an average cost of $10,000 per research paper published. The study has had different sponsors at different times, and while the study had to adapt itself to the priorities of these sponsors (such as a major retailer, cigarette company and a program against alcoholism), it still managed to sustain the collection of data related to its core research questions.

With its emphasis on the choice of appropriate control variables and other related issues of study design, this book is a great primer on how to design and adapt longitudinal research studies for maximum research impact.

Dr. Vailant reports that our lives become more fulfilling than before as he presents comprehensive and concise information that's based on a study of 200 men, and explains what it's like to bloom beyond retirement,while he includes reports on the entire life span. In addition, the author shares his findings on all aspects of male life, offers reports on major findings, and concludes what makes a successful and healthy life. Interesting facts are presented on DNA studies, alcoholism,and how human growth continues long after maturation. The author is a Great storyteller as he explains the Grant Study of men through age 91, which is the most important study of the life span ever done. Babyboomers will enjoy this intriguing story of human development,as they read about the findings in a study of individuals for the Harvard Study of Adult Development. This incredible book is insightful, with a blend of humor as it draws the reader's attention immediately. 'TRIUMPHS OF EXPERIENCE' is also Enjoyable, Educational, and filled with Wisdom. A well written and documented description of a life-long cohort study of middle class young white men conducted by established investigators. Important insights are provided into critical psycho-social and medical issues bearing on all-round success in life. The importance is stressed of a warm early upbringing as well as the capacity for and receptiveness of intimacy (love.) Particularly revealing is the major impact of heredity and the destructive effect of alcoholism on the life history, sometimes emerging only after many years. A must read.

�Dr Judy Willis has written an excellent book for helping teachers understand how to teach in ways that engage students' brains and lead to deeper learning. The short text is easy to understand, yet filled with valuable information for teachers.

Teachers must constantly make decisions about which teaching method to use at any given point. Complicating the decision-making, however, is the plethora of methods from which teachers may choose, and the fact that proponents of so many different methods claim to have scientific research to support their ideas. Nevertheless, the task of choosing might be a little easier after reading Willis's book. While many texts focus on advising teachers how to implement a specific teaching strategy, Willis focuses on helping teachers understand how the human brain works and how teachers can use that knowledge to choose strategies that tap into the brain's normal processes.

In just over 100 pages, Willis deals with a wide range of educational issues. For example, she describes how the brain stores information and develops networking connections between related data. This, she writes, can help teachers understand why students sometimes have difficulty learning vocabulary. Unless a student is shown the relationships between existing knowledge and the new vocabulary, the student's brain stores the new information in isolation. Storing information in isolation then makes it more difficult for the brain to retrieve the information later. Conversely, if the student understands the connections between previous knowledge and new knowledge, the brain literally networks the information, which makes it easier for the brain to retrieve the information in the future. Willis describes how teachers can use graphic organizers, visualization, and role-play to help students make those cognitive connections.

An entire chapter is dedicated to understand how stress affects the brain and how schools and families can work together to reduce stress on students and help students handle the stress they do feel. Another chapter is dedicated to discussing many good assessment techniques. In this context, rather than merely describing how to write rubrics, Willis describes how rubrics help students' brains develop.

Of course, in describing so many neurological functions, it is necessary for Willis to use intimidating terms, such as dendrites, occipital lobes, and prefrontal cortex. Willis does a remarkable job, however, explaining such terms. And in case the reader forgets what a term means mid-book, the book includes a handy glossary.

I found Research-Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning to be a surprisingly understandable, yet treasure-packed resource. And its readability and short length mean one can easily read it over a weekend.

Best of all, the book could meet the needs of a wide audience. Willis has explained her ideas well enough that preservice teachers could easily understand the material; in fact, I can see this book becoming popular in teacher education programs. At the same time, the book offers such a unique perspective and valuable information that even veteran teachers are likely to benefit from investing their time in reading it.

Judy Willis, MD, M. Ed (Santa Barbara) a board certified neurologist and middle school teacher, has combined her training in neuroscience and neuroimaging with her teaching education and years of classroom experience. She is an authority in the field of learning-centered brain research and strategies derived from this research for use by parents and educators. Very readable and useful little book by a classroom teacher who has also had a career in neurology.

Cognitive Science is a particular interest of mine. I am always interested in brain-based theories of how to engage students in the classroom learning experience. Perhaps because this volume is already six years old, I didn't find any information that was new to me, but I enjoyed reviewing the concepts put forth here.

This is a good introductory book. It is practical, straight-forward and easy to understand.

Not what I expected

I love Oya! I wanted a book that would help me in understanding this Orisha more deeply but this was a compilation of others interpretations of her through personal experiences. I got lost in the shuffle and most of the reading was tedious, so I didn't finish it. Understand that it's not that the book is no good, it's that it wasn't what I expected or was looking for.

Poorly written

This is a fascinating subject as this is one of the most complex African goddesses. There has obviously been lots of research but the author jumps from one subject to another and unintentionally trivializes the subject. We go from buffalo goddesses to spirits of lightning to the goddess of the cloth. Gleason could have done a much better job in writing.

"Oya: In Praise of an African Goddess" is a well researched thoughtful and spiritual guide to the angelic force, orisha Oya. Judith Gleason presents an in depth analysis of Oya's abilities to quickly transform weather, produce tornadoes and violent storms. The illustrations bring both the scientific and the emotional aspects of Oya brilliantly to life. It would seem to be a challenging job to dedicate an entire book to one single orisha but Judith Gleason does it with great passion. "Oya: In Praise of an African Goddess" is highly recommended for students, practitioners and those curious about Ifa.

first 110 pages are gold

I strongly recommend this book, but I want to say a few things. I think I have an above average understanding of Hegel and I found the first 100 pages difficult. In the first 110 pages, Williams defines the concept of "recognition". this is the most important part of the book. Take your time, study this section slowly. He doesn't take short-cuts; so there is a ton of information. The next 100 pages deal with "morality", and the remainder of the book deals with "ethical; substance". this is post-graduate level, intelligent writing. Williams opens a concept that usually doesn't get detailed analysis. I took my time and reaped the benefit. Tremendous book. Get it for sure.
