Introductory Islamic Briefing

"The Religion of the Crescent: Being the James Long Lectures on Muhammadanism" by William St. Clair Tisdall. Originally published in 1895, with a revised 1905 second edition (which is the 2009 reprint by "Kessinger Publishing's Legacy Reprints"). The author was the former secretary of the "CMS" or Christian Missionary Service Mission in Julfa, Persia {Iran]. The 1906 edition (second revised edition) was published in London for the "Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge." The author discusses four aspects of Sunni Islam: (1) its Strengths [40 pages], (2) its Weaknesses [70 pages], (3) its Origin [60 pages], and (4) its Influence [40 pages]. Regarding Islam's (1) "Strengths", the author discusses: Unity of God; hatred of idolatry; its Five Foundations; and other the basic stuff about Islam. The author becomes more exploratory when he discusses (2) its "Weaknesses:" Errors about Divine Nature: Master, not Father; Allah a despot; Islam not Anthropomorphic in doctrine; Allah commands breaches of Moral Law; Fate; View of Sin unsatisfactory; Denial of an Atonement, Christ's Deity and Death denied; the Muslim Paradise: gardens, fountains, maidens, Houries; Hell: all Muslims ultimately saved; Error f understanding such phrases in Christian sense; an Antichristian faith. Pertaining to (3) "its Origin": pre-Islamic Arabs; Arabian idolatry; Influence of Talmudic Judaism on Muhammad; Influence of Christianity on Muhammad; Fabricates revelations: Muhammad's miracles; Obligation to persecute. Regarding (4) Islam's "Influence": the author discusses Muslim family life; Political life; Religious life; Rationalism; Slavery: sanctioned by Muhammad; Concubinage; Position of women; the Bible annulled; No greater obstacle to Christianity than Islam; and The Wahhabis. The author was versed with Arabic, so he does quote in Arabic from various ayats (verses) in the Koran. Regarding all of the above-mentioned topics, the author essentially mentions them - he really doesn't `analyze' or `scrutinize' them extensively; he shows how they `fit' together, and he notes a number of discrepancies, but there isn't really any deep dissection of the discrepancies. This is more of an beginner's broad and brief introduction to Islam. Interestingly, the author notes Mohammad's requirement that Muslims must wash the soles of their feet (otherwise the soles will be in `hell-fire'); I saw a Saudi soldier in 1991 in Hafra al-Batin sprinkle his boots with water in a restroom before dinner (an example of the symbolic, ritual `wudu'). As a Christian missionary, the author was concerned about: "The denial of Man's free-will, and the belief that all our actions are inalterably predestined for us, prevent Muslims from feeling the terrible guilt of [Original] Sin" (p. 87). At times `objective' scholarship of the Koran is simply displaced by a `The Quran is false, because the Bible is Truth' mentality. The author occasionally quotes from the ahadeeth to help clarify some Koranic topic. Overall, this is too short of a booklet for the author to briefly discuss so many topics; not a book I would recommend to the novice Islamic student.
