Eby stands out as a particularly fine writer who has brought unfamiliar Hemingway materials together in creative conjunctions to illuminate the classic works. His critical savvy and sense of humor are very refreshing.
Interest in Hemingway s psychosexuality and in the formation and transgression of gender identities as depicted in his fiction are central to Hemingway biography and criticism right now. I am personally extremely skeptical about the value of the psychoanalytic method. So, I approach Eby s book as a resisting reader, and what I like best about it is his sensitivity to my resistance and his own ability to look self-critically at his method. His introduction, an apologia for his method in which he reviews, with great good humor I might add, the charges commonly brought against psychoanalytic interpretations both of authors lives and their literary output, is especially excellent. Eby s willingness to address my concerns before they arise, or as they arise, and to show that he has thought carefully about the limits of his approach, and accepts no theory without questioning, I found very persuasive. "Carl Eby's _Hemingway's Fetishism_ ... is a bold book, a daring book--a persuasive and even a moving book.... Eby attempts nothing less than a complete reinterpretation of Hemingway's life and work in the context of his basic hypothesis....
The heart of Eby's project resides in his effort to give a synthetic account of Hemingway's fascination with hair. Eby is not, of course, the first to notice this preoccupation. But he is the first to try to understand its full psychological complexity, as well as to trace the substitutive logic by which Hemingway moves from meditations on hair to, say, fantasies about cats, the actual slaughter of rabbits, dreams about lions, a desire for pierced ears, and a wish for the dark pigmentation of racially marked skin. For Eby, each of these represents a displaced version of the primal fetish, hair. His book sets out to explore this proposition by showing, first, _that_ Hemingway was a fetishist and _how_ he came to be one; and second, why it was that hair in particular became his fetish of choice....
Eby makes [his] theoretical argument cumulatively over several chapters. He draws not only on Freud's classic work, but on more recent theories by Joyce McDougall, Phyllis Greenacre, George Zavitzianos, D. W. Winnicott, and especially, Robert Stoller. In doing so, he makes provocative claims about the relations between fetishism, melancholia, and transvestism; about the tendency of male perversions to bolster conventional masculinity, despite appearing to undermine it; about the inverse relation between artistic creativity and fetishistic fixation; and about the fetish object's link to what Winnicott calls the 'transitional object.'
But more impressive than this theoretical sophistication is Eby's firm commitment to the expressive character of literature--to the proposition that literature offers psychological insights that are multifaceted and theoretically irreducible. His readings seek to grant Hemingway's works their idiosyncratic forms of knowledge. He does not, accordingly, merely use fetishism as a lens through which to read Hemingway's texts, but interprets Hemingway's fiction in a way that illuminates and renders more complex our understanding of the psychology of fetishism."

"Eby's knowledge of psychoanalytic and gender theory is extraordinary; in addition he has read all of Hemingway's published and unpublished writings.... Indeed, he seems to have a concordance-like memory of Hemingway's every word....
The book offers for the first time a theoretically sophisticated and comprehensive study of Hemingway's gender instability, erotic attachment to hair, narcissism, latent homosexuality, castration anxiety, and split toward women.... Hemingway's Fetishism is an extraordinary book ... written with verve, wit, and good humor. [Eby] is always self-critical of his methodology and suggests other explanations for the ones he provides, thus convincing us that he can see a variety of critical perspectives. Eby demythologizes Hemingway without dehumanizing him or dismissing him, and despite his heavy reliance upon psychoanalytic theory, he avoids the language of psychobabble. He also avoids pathography, arguing instead that the childhood events that damaged Hemingway's psyche may have contributed to his ability to identify with others. It is doubtful that any study published in the next few years on Hemingway will be as insightful and controversial as this one.

About the Author
William J. Ray is a Professor of Psychology at Penn State University. He received his PhD�from Vanderbilt University and was a Fellow in Medical Psychology at the University of�California Medical Center in San Francisco. He received his undergraduate degree from�Eckerd College, where he learned about the value of primary sources and the need to integrate information�from a number of perspectives. As part of his clinical training, he has worked in a number of�mental hospitals and clinics across the country, where he developed an appreciation of the experiences�of those with mental disorders. In his career, he has served as a visiting professor and researcher at the�University of Hawaii, M�nster University, University of Rome, T�bingen University, and Konstanz�University. At Penn State, he is currently the Director of the SCAN (Specialization in Cognitive and�Affective Neuroscience) program and was previously the Director of the Clinical Psychology Program.�His research has focused on approaching clinical questions from a neuroscience perspective. He has�used psychophysiological and brain imaging techniques such as EEG, MEG, DTI, and fMRI to study�emotionality, psychopathology, and individual differences. These studies can be found in numerous�articles, book chapters, and books. His work has been published in such journals as Science, Proceedings�of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Neuroscience, Psychophysiology, Physiological Reviews,�Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology,�Cognitive Brain Research, Biological Psychology, NeuroImage, and Clinical Neurophysiology. This work�has been funded by both national and international agencies including NIH, NIMH, NASA, NATO,�and the DAAD. In addition to research, teaching has been an important part of his career. Yahiya Emerick is an American convert to Islam who has been involved in interfaith issues and education since 1990. He has a graduate degree in history, has authored 14 books for adults and children, and has been published in many magazines, including the Journal for Religion and Education.

Islam is a Tolerant Religion

Islam, like most religions, is complex and open to interpretation. The author, Yahiya Emerick, was born into an American Christian family, and converted to Islam in 1989. Emerick tries to avoid controversy and tells the reader that Islam promotes religious tolerance. However, Islam has an image problem and I bought this book to get a better understanding of what the typical Muslim believes. As an outside observer there seem to be two Islams. There is the one that educated Western Muslims like the author promotes, this is a religion of peace, love, and forgiveness. In this respect, Islam does not seem that much different from Christianity and it is a religion that we in the West can feel comfortable with. Unfortunately, there is this other Islam represented by bearded zealots who share a world view not that much different from Adolf Hitler. These people are successfully spreading their message throughout the Middle East and North Africa. They want to kill heretics and apostates and impose Islamic law on non-believers. The Guide writes about the "nice" Islam and mostly ignores the other angry religion. As a result, the book glosses over or ignores a lot of controversial issues that most people in the West want to understand.

Emerick claims that all religions have their bad apples and terrorists groups like those who attacked the mall in Nairobi, are not true Muslims. His view is that the extremists are a tiny minority and the majority of Muslims are good people who oppose violence. Hopefully he is correct, however you are not going to find a discussion on the causes of terrorism in this book.

Emerick tells us that Islam is a tolerant religion. He uses the example of Muhammad, who practiced tolerance towards Jews and Christians in the 7th century. I recently spoke to a Christian from the Sudan who had a different perspective. Christians in the Middle East have had to cope with intolerance in recent years in countries like Lebanon and Egypt. Since 2003 the number of Christians in Iraq has fallen from 1.5 million to 250,000 and hundreds of churches have been destroyed. In the UK, a majority of Muslims told pollsters that it is acceptable to curb free speech to prevent their religion being criticized. Emerick does not address the issue of whether Islam is compatible with Western values and ignores the thorny subject of Shariah law which many Muslims in Europe want to introduce.

Another controversial issue is the appropriateness of the veil and the need for women should cover their heads. Europe is debating whether to ban the veil in certain circumstances. According to the author, women need to cover their heads to dampen unwanted sexual advances from men. This seems a strange argument for anyone brought up in the West. Few women at Cairo University in the 1970s covered their heads or wore a veil, today the reverse is true. Emerick doesn't explain why attitudes have changed and why Muslims in countries like Egypt now appear to be more devout.

I came away confused about the contradictions between Emerick's peaceful and reassuring Islam and the newspaper headlines we have become accustomed to reading. There are obviously different ways of interpreting Islam, Emerick presents a religion that we shouldn't be afraid of, I hope he is correct.

Did you know

--Buddhists worship Buddha? (p. 6)
--Christians who accept Jesus are free to sin--they're going to heaven in any case? (p. 32)

I did learn things about Islam I didn't know:

--It is impossible to change the wording of the Koran (God won't allow it). (p. 30)
--An Islamic leader's extramarital affair should be hidden from his followers. (p. 32)
--For a Muslim, everything that's a sin on earth is fine to do in the next life. (p. 35)
--A Muslim can't watch TV or use the Internet. (p. 38) (Oddly, the "Economist" magazine wrote "Muslims have embraced the internet" (August 18, 2012). Wonder who is right.)
--Adam and Eve did not see God in the Garden of Eden. Genesis got it wrong. (p. 39) (Whether or not Genesis is real, it's pretty hard to argue God wasn't a central character on stage in the story.)

By page 44, the author's credibility had completely faded for me. Even sadder is the claim a "technical reviewer" confirmed the "accuracy" of everything in the book (p. xxiii). I keep hundreds of books. This one I threw in the trash.

This was very enlightening . I learned things about Islam I had zero knowledge of . This book convinces me that to create peace even among the various sects of Islam will be extremely difficult never mind between Muslims and the rest of the Western world !

Comprehensive details of each aircraft are coupled with information on the test centers from which these testbeds operate including the M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute in Zhukovskiy, and the Air Force's 929th State Flight Test Centre in Akhtoobinsk.

More than 500 photographs, line drawings, close-up views of tell-tale 'bumps and bulges' and color profiles illustrate the aircraft providing a wealth of information for the historian and modeler alike.

More old Iron Curtain happenings revealed

Gordon, Komissarov and Hikoki have done it again, exposing more of what went on behind the old Iron Curtain, in a heavy book with a lot of fascinating aircraft.

It should be pointed out that, for the most part, these are not experimental prototypes of new aircraft, but rather modifications of existing production aircraft. The chapter breakdown is very revealing:

1. Aerodynamic testbeds: Airfoil sections, canards, wing shapes. The best known may be the Mig-21 "Analogue" that tested the Tu-144's ogival wing shape.
2. Aircraft systems testbeds: Refuelling, landing gear, control systems, ejection seats, de-icing, boundary layer control, aircraft carrier technology. One example is the Soviet counterpart to the "flying bedstead".
3. Propulsion testbeds: Jets, rockets, ramjets, propellers. Various Tupolev aircraft got a lot of use.
4. Avionics testbeds: Navigation, radar, ECM, missile guidance. There's even a manned version of the "Kennel" cruise missile!
5. Weapons testbeds: Cannons, missiles, bomb delivery. Includes aircraft carrying the Soviet version of the V-1.
6. Weather research aircraft: Mostly Antonovs and Ilyushins.
7. Geophysical survey aircraft: Ditto.
8. Miscellaneous applications: Environmental research, agricultural survey, parachute systems, stealth technology, air accident investigation, space shuttle testbeds.

All of the text entries are backed up by a marvelous mix of black & white and color photos, most obviously never published before in the West, line drawings and color side-views, which also show the insignias of all of the various organizations involved in these tests.

As an engineer, I can appreciate some of the "nuts & bolts" of these design modifications, but any casual fan of aviation history or technology will get a kick out of this work.

About the Author
Curtis Hayes was Professor of Elementary Education at Boise State University. He has also worked in bilingual education and ESL programs in Texas and Idaho school districts. He was coauthor of the Heinemann title Litearcy con carino.

Robert Bahruth is Professor of Bilingual Education at Boise State University, where he introduces his students to the pedagogy of Paulo Freire.

Carolyn Kessler is Professor of ESL/Applied Linguistics at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has also worked extensively in professional development programs for English language learners throughout the U.S. and internationally.

still one of the best books!

I keep trying to offer newer or different books to my students that inform them about teaching second language learners. Other books may have a newer copyright, but this book is the best. The ideas within this book were ahead of their time way back when.
I always circle back to Literacy Con Carino for ELL strategies. All things equal, even if there were a book with more or better strategies, the Carino/kindness and compassionate voice within this book could not be matched. It always reminds me why kind and considerate teachers provide the most context and the most meaning for their language different learners.

About the Author
Carolyn E.C. Paris (A.B. University of Illinois 1973; M.A. University of Texas 1975; J.D. Stanford University 1978; M.B.A. Columbia University 2001; Columbia University Second Majors Program (Computer Science) 2002) was at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City from 1978 to 1980 and from 1983 through 1999, where she was a partner from 1989 through 1998, and Director of Practice Information and Professional Development in 1999. Her practice at Davis Polk encompassed a broad range of debt finance, including acquisition and leveraged finance, on behalf of both financial institutions and corporate and municipal clients. From 1980-1983, she was with Coudert Brothers in Singapore, involved principally with Indonesian lending and project-related work. During 2001-2002, she was a Fellow at the Deming Center for Quality, Productivity and Competitiveness at the Columbia Business School (New York City). From 2003-2007, she worked in risk management and systems development for Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw in London.
Ms. Paris is the author of How to Draft for Corporate Finance (Practising Law Institute 2001 & Supp. 2006). She is also author of "Selecting a Bankruptcy Remote Entity," in New York and Delaware Business Entities (eds. Arthur Norman Field and Morton Moskin, West 1997), co-author of "Operational Due Diligence," in Due Diligence for Global Deal Making (ed. Arthur Rosenbloom, Bloomberg Press 2002), and author of "Contract Management: Design Parameters and Challenges to Implementation," in A Proactive Approach: Scandinavian Studies in Law Volume 49 (Stockholm Institute for Scandinavian Law 2006).
